Hi, I am a 3rd year DO student, planning on taking the COMLEX Step II this Summer. I had heard that I can take the USMLE Step II without having taken the USMLE Step I. Is this true? What have you heard about this?

Thank you very much.

Short answer - Yes you can

From what I know, most places that look at USMLE look at Step 1 since they can use that to make decisions on who to offer interviews to. Also, since lots of people take Step 2 after interviews, or even after having matched, there may not be any reason to take it if you are looking for an allopathic residency.
Best bet is to research your top 5 choices & ask them what their take on USMLE is. Some REQUIRE Step 1 only, some both Steps & others (like UTSW-Dallas) never invite DOs (atleast for IM) 😀

If you're just trying to get your foot in the door, I would recommend Step 1, rather than Step 2.

Good Luck
