Hi

I'm medical student in Germany and I'm trying to get some information about step1 and of cause some material to start learning for the test.

It would be great if you could send me some information or links where I can download some useful material to pass the exam.

By the way I couldn't find anywhere some information about good books which I should use to prepare my self for the step 1 maybe you have a good advice for me.

Thank for your cooperation

There is only one thing you need to do..Buy
FIRST AID FOR THE USMLE STEP 1 (A student to student guide)
Read this from cover to cover and especially concentrate on the first 60 +pages
and then start studying EVERYTHING else in there..
break-a-leg

Hi Tahnks but First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 is not enough what else is important to be safe for the step1????

I recommend Rapid Review Pathology by Edward F. Goljan. Listen to the audio lectures too. They are excellent! Also Kaplan lecture notes for biochemistry and Physiology. For question sources, you should do Kaplan Qbank, USMLErx and Robbins Review of Pathology Question book. And of course do all the NBME self assessment test (1-4).

Good luck.

Thank's a lot.

What do you think how much time will a "normal person" need to prepare himself for the step 1 (so than you can pass it safe) if you have "normal" knowledge about the basics of all Step 1 topics?

thanks

Most US med students take between 4-6 weeks to study for step 1. Over 90% of US students pass Step 1 with an average of about 218. It is difficult to decide what "normal knowledge" is. I would suggest that you do NBME Form 1, so that you get an idea of what kind of questions they ask. At the end, they give you a score and a corresponding USMLE score estimate. They also point out your strong/weak areas. Based on that, you can plan your study schedule.

You mentioned the Kaplans lecture notes. Do you where I can get a copy without paying for the course?

I have First Aid for Step 1. A significant part of this book focuses on clinical medicine... renal medicine, cardiology, neurology, etc? Do we need to know this in depth. Or is the emphasis mostly on pharmacology, biochemistry, immunogy, pathology

Some of these topics are not covered that well by UK medical educational system; topics like biochemistry, behavioural science. Is the First Aid book a good enough resource for biochemistry or behaviour science, or will I need to refer to the review books for further elaboration?

Hi Medico,

I belong to a similar group of students and docs who had to take the usmle in NZ, Germany, Egypt and India.

Many of my friends are already docs and working for a couple of years in the field but needed the usmle for various reasons.

Still it took time to prepare for everyone of us ... it's not only the english but also the style of the Q ....
Q are not simply asking A to E --- no it can go u to K
... and most of the Q also 2 step Q ...There will be only few Q simply asking you about the disease, in the end will be what receptor is affected or what will be the best treatment. It is basically very much clinic. So it would be good if you are already in the clinic!

And after you know the basic stuff (Patho, Patho-Physio,Ana, Histo, Social Science, Pharma, Immo, Statistics etc.) you can start answering Q. There are different online sources with very different prices,so you need to shop around a bit.The standard is Kaplan, but there is also a Q bank from First Aid around. My personal favourite is usmleeasy.com, which is basically the pretest Q. You can take some tests for free and find out which QBank suits you most and which one you can afford!

But again before you start answering Q learn the Basics.

Also this for you to consider
Before taking the test and preparing for it,make sure that you really need it for your future plans in Europe or elsewhere
(It can be money consuming esp.when you take all tests incl. Step2 CS!!!)

Good luck and KOPF HOCH ---
