USMLEWORLD for the Mac?

Hi. I'm trying to decide between the USMLEWORLD question bank and Kaplan's QBank. Everyone keeps saying how USMLEWORLD is better, even though the application you have to download only works on a PC.

However, I just checked their website (usmleworld.com) and it seems that they do support Macs. Does anyone know if this is new, or am I looking at the wrong company?

The software is all web-based, so there is no reason it shouldn't work on a Mac, except that they've set their website to detect what browser you're using and return an error message if you're using anything but Windows + IE. However, there are little programs you download (one is called Tinker Tool) that let you change the user agent in Safari. Meaning that Safari then tells all the websites it connects to "hi I'm IE on a Windows machine" so then the usmleworld website lets you log in and it works just fine. This is how I accessed it last year to study for step 2, and I didn't have any problems.

First, try searching the forums. It may not be in "Gen Residency Issues". It's probably in USMLE forums, likely Step2. There is a great description of a workaround, which I used earlier this year. It's free, and once you get the hang of it, it won't take too long to log in. Maybe adds a couple minutes to the log in.

I have also heard that they have fixed the problem, though. So I would just go ahead and go with USMLEWorld.

I had read (on SDN) that Kaplan is best for Step 1, UWorld for Step 2. Frankly, I think you would be hard pressed to find a stat showing students using one or the other performing better.

I made my choice based on price 😉

Thank you so much for your help hurricane. You are a genius. I have been wondering if something like this was possible but i am not computer smart enough to figure stuff like this out. I have virtual pc on my mac but it takes FOREVER to switch between the two. I would kiss your feet if i could. 😉 Thank you again for sharing your wisdom.
