started working on it today.


question to those who are enrolled at USN..

do you think they want structured essays?
or do you think they'll accept answers that are short, sweet, and to the point?
 
I am applying to USN. The thing is they wouldn't start doing anything until the deadline, which means there is no preference for students who apply early.
Each essay question is limited to half of a page. I might just write 2 paragraph for each.
 
Is it easier to get in the school if you choose admission from

either campus? or just one campus like Nevada or Utah?

Please share your thoughts.

zn1988- on the school's website, it does say that the will review applications before the deadline:
"students are encouraged to apply before the application deadline. The Admissions Office will process and evaluate applications it receives before the application deadline."

Nerdgirl- this might help you out:
2007 Application Statistics: 1611 applications received; 227 students admitted (145 Nevada Campus and 82 Utah Campus); Overall GPA of admitted students was 3.7.
You probably have a better chance if you select the option for either campus because there are more total spots avaliable (227). I get the sense that there might be more applicants to NV vs. UT. I, for one, am only applying to the NV campus.

I applied the first day the application came out..I think I did a little too much by express mailing it. Just wanted it to be the first application there..a little crazy huh? I'm only applying for this school, actually moving to Henderson this january to finish prereqs over there.
I visited the school, and there are only a lot of essay questions because the interviewers will be reviewing them and asking questions about them.
 
I am not applying.

$150 for an app where the only criteria used to determine if an applicant will get an interview is science and CUM gpa is outrageous.
 
Yes, it matters when you submit the application. Interviews are mainly first come first served, based on meeting certain baseline numbers.

Also it really doesn't matter which campus you say you want to go to. As you are admitted you get the pick which campus you want. Only the last few usually have a problem not getting the campus they want. It is true that the Henderson campus filled up first, but that was an issue for very few students.

Short and sweet is good, IF you completely answer the question. You will find that if you are completely answering the question you will have a hard time fitting all the info into the allowed space.

Where did u hear that from? I asked Dr. DeYoung and he told me it doesn't matter, only benefit is if u submit early and u're missing somethign they'll let u know and u'll have time correct it.

I know people who submitted their apps mid december and still got admitted

From what Dr. Deyoung told me is all they do is put everyone's cum, prereq science, degree, # of prereqs done (slightly matters) IN a computer and assign points. Top point getters get invites where there the interviewer will read your essay responses and ask questions.
 
Experience. They start giving interview appointments, before the deadline. I know people that turned their apps in at the very end and had ok stats, that didn't get interview, while people with w/ the same stats did get interviews that applied at the first of the cycle.

Applying late will not stop a great candidate, we have a student who sent in her app on the last day and was admitted.

But timing can make a difference for a candidate that is not as strong.

i don't understand how this school could have the reputation of being "easy," but the avg GPA is 3.7; i can't decide if i should apply. i only have a 3.5 overall and 3.2 science. that doesn't guarantee me anything, and i don't really know if i should risk spending $150 that i don't have cause i've already spent $1100+ for other pharm apps. what do you think?

easy in terms of no letters of req and questions instead of personal statement.

This is just BS...student at USN drop out, get kick out, or have to pay again to take classes in the summer with the 90% passing standard...by the time you get out not three years maybe four to five years of tuition.......if you have any problems........., consider finding another careers, they accept a bunch of students through bigotry and eliminate the weak one............this is a fact which is hidden from the public, ...and if you see your classmate missing you know what i am talking about

Fitting into allowed space shouldn't be a problem...IF...you don't use run-on sentences, sentence fragments, unnecessary words, etc.

In short, having a good mastery of English writing skills will keep your answers short and to the point.

Since you go in KNOWING that you have to maintain a minimum 90% in ALL your classes, I DON'T SEE THE CONFLICT. You either accept their terms and conditions up front and enroll, or you don't enroll. Simple.

Not that I like their block-education system, but bottom line is they can afford to continue as they have been because there is no shortage of applicants.

As another poster stated, it is "easy" in the terms of no lors and pcat, and not an enormous amount of pre-requisites. But yes, they do look primarily at your gpa and interview. So if you do not have a very high gpa and would be relying more on letters of recommendation or pcat, then it will be a more difficult school to get into.

Remember that that is the average gpa; they do accept people with gpa's below 3.7.

As far as the for the actual school being easy, whoever said that must be one of those rare geniuses that pick things up really quickly. I've gotten all A's in my pre-requisites and I have to study all the time. Almost everyone I talk to in my class says the same thing. Believe me, usn is not easy; at least not for most people.

Where are you getting the bigotry from? I have not noticed that. But yes, there have been several people that have dropped from our class already.

All I can say is, if you go into usn thinking "well, since you have to get above a 90%, then the exams will have to be easy..." you will be severely disappointed. I don't know how other exams are at other pharmacy schools because I have not been to another, so maybe they do lighten the exams a little; but you have to study your as* off to get that 90%.

Hey, I'm doing alright so far; I passed all four exams without having to remediate, however I study a lot. I don't have a job or family or anything (except a boyfriend, but he supports me with having to study a lot), and I don't think I could do it if I worked or had to take care of kids or anything like that. However, there are a lot of people in my class that do have to work, or have a family. Some do ok, but some are not doing that well, or are always having to go back monday to remediate (which I heard is even twice as stressful as friday's exam).

It's pretty tough I think, and so do a lot of my classmates. And it's very stressful. So yeah, you have to really think about if you can handle that amount of stress and devote that much time to it. It is not easy I can tell you that.

The good thing is that there are no text books; the instructors give you hand outs and these are the only things they will test you on. The thing is you have to know those handouts inside and out, backwards and forwards. The block system helps too, so as long as you have a good understanding of the material, you do not have to worry about some instructor nit-picking you on something you learned two months ago.

I think I prefer it to schools where you have like six different classes with exams twice a semester over all that material. I've always been better able to concentrate on a few subjects intensely over a short period of time rather than a wide variety of subjects over a longer period of time. But you have to figure out what is best for you, and then go with that.

Oh, one more thing that helps on friday exams is that you have these "team points": after you take the exam individually, you go into pre-assigned teams and take it again as a group. If your team gets a 95% or higher (usually missing only 3 out of 60), 5 percentage points will be added to the exam that you took on your own; so now you can get an 85% and still pass. Usually, most teams get the points, I'd say ~95% of the time (so far it has been that way). Part of the reason why monday is so much more stressful is that you do not have access to these team points so you have to get a 90% entirely on your own.

When I visited the school, I asked Laurie Briggs a bunch of questions and here are some things that she answered.
~40% of students w/o BA or BS are admitted
~For classes that are retaken, but not prereq., the GPA depends on transcript
~You have to buy the laptop, because in the past, they tried installing everything on the students' personal laptops and it took too long so they bought DELL laptops with already installed programs
~Loans? pay back within 25 yrs
~Yes, you do get holidays off
~GPA Range of admitted students....3.4-4.0 (of course, avg. is 3.7, sorry forgot if this is overall GPA or science GPA)
~C/NC and Ws do not count against your grade...again the GPA is based on the transcript

She also said that if Dr. Deyoung could have his way, he would interview all the applicants b/c he believes that even a below 3.0 student can be a better pharmacist than a 4.0 student.

I don't have a BA/BS so those that do have a 1 pt advantage...

Hey not trying to hijack thread but this is pretty much first time I have heard of USN other then it it just a bad school.(I have just heard that from the pharmascists I work with) So I have a few questions.

First while in school there do you know if people are having a hard time finding internships. I ask this because a few people I work with told me that like IHC does not take people from USN.

Second question I was told that a lot of the class's are done via like television that there isn't always a teacher even there.

Lastly I have heard that graduates are having tough time finding jobs because people didn't think they learned enough. Also I have heard that the school is not yet really have accreditation and could possibly not become I heard it is like a Candidate or something like that.

Sorry for possibly highjacking but just really want to hear from someone going to school there instead of just what I have heard from cowokers who all graduated from UoU so are probaly biased to any new school.

Since usn is geared more toward retail, those graduates looking for jobs other than retail may have a more difficult time, but probably mainly because there are just more jobs available for people who want to go into retail.

USN is accredited. Please check ACPE's website: http://www.acpe-accredit.org/students/programs.asp They list all accredited pharmacy schools and schools that have a pre-candidate status. Currently usn is an accredited doctor of pharmacy school, meaning that they are no more in a pre-candidate status. This year the school is up for a review from ACPE which is "an on-site evaluation, but may refer to and be based upon a written report from the institution as requested by ACPE" (taken from the ACPE website). This review is something that is done regularly for every school. Looking down the list, it seems like for newer schools it is done more frequently, and then for older more established schools, like maybe once every five years or something like that.
 
Hey thanks piyi for taking time to clear up some things for me. Oh btw IHC is intermountain healthcare it's what pretty much runs most the hospitals here in Utah.

It is really great to hear some good things I think I am going to really have to look into USN instead of Univeristy of Utah.


One more quick question that link you showed it has USN in nevada so that means the campus in utah is also has accreditation?

The utah campus is part of usn, so it is the same thing; so, yes, the campus in utah is also accredited.
 
Ah very cool thanks so much going to have to look into visting the utah campus for sure now going there seems like could really be a good option now.
 
Does anyone know when interview invitations are going to be given? I've never applied to any school before...i'm such a newbie. 😛
 
Has anyone received any conformations from USN regarding their application? I sent mine in, I think 3 weeks ago and I haven't received any e-mails yet.

i recieved confirmation. i sent the application the week it was out and recieved confrimation email october 4th.
 
I received a confirmation 1-2 weeks after I sent it in. I would wait another week and then e-mail Laurie Briggs..Her e-mail is [email protected].

I sent mine last week, I got an email from Laurie to tell me that usn has received my application.

Since this is not rolling admission, I think I will wait for the result for OCT pcat before I apply. And the fact that this is 3-year program is very interesting.

For now, I am preparing essay for Jefferson and UH at Hilo without knowing my PCAT result. At least, they are not as competitive as some other schools I think.

You should also know that 99% of the 2007 graduating class passed the NAPLEX.

There is no teaching via "TV" at all.

Some IHC clinical pharmacists are on faculty at USN's South Jordan Campus.

Oh hey thanks thats some more really good info I really need to find out more I guess then because I was looking at the pre-reqs for USN and I could apply next year.

Yeah, that sounds more like USN...And I don't think we need any other explanations. Any pharmacy school you get in to you will need to work hard, verrry hard to graduate, OK...and I would't believe anyone saying something else...

anyone know how many students have transfer or drop out so far?? also, why are they accepting students without pharmacy experience...is it because their "offer of acceptance" got denied by the students who were accepted?? (i know the answer but i just want to hear from )

The last I heard, about 10 have dropped so far.

Honestly, I do not know why they accept students without pharmacy experience; I guess they feel that some applicants are strong enough without it. However, I feel that previous pharmacy experience is very important to have before applying to pharmacy school; especially if someone wants to go into retail pharmacy, and a majority of students from usn go into retail (I asked this question during my interview). Even if you just volunteer or shadow a pharmacist (I have heard that many independent pharmacies are open to this), I think it would be good to just get an idea of what you are getting into.

About denying the offer of acceptance, maybe this is true; I think this is what I have heard somewhere on this forum, but then you always have to take these sort of things with a grain of salt. Since I have not known anyone that has denied usn's offer of acceptance, I cannot make any definite claims about it.

I remember reading a post about usn's waitlist, and it seemed like quite a few people were accepted from it. I think it may have been on that same post where I read that a lot of people from california get accepted early at usn and then later get accepted at a university in their homestate, so they deny usn's offer of acceptance. Now this would correlate with the statistics at usn since there are quite a few students from california. However, I don't remember the post, so I'm not one hundred percent sure about this.

You said you knew the answer, so what is it?

Exactly. their admission system is flawed. There is a reason why majority of schools ask for LOR and experience.
 
So are you saying that people without pharmacy experience, should NOT be accepted into pharmacy schools?

I got accepted to a few schools and had to reject a few letters of acceptance. I don't think that says anything about the schools. I think its common for students to apply to more than one school and be accepted by more than one school.
 
USN if not for everyone. It is very fast paced. You are packing 3 years of class room study into 2. You have to be willing to put in the time make sure you stay caught up, there isn't time to catch up. We have only had 1 student drop out of our class in Utah this year. It was due to health problems, not the school. Yes the 90% is tough, but it is do-able.

USN has a good relationship with IHC. There are not a lot of pharmacist w/ IHC from USN, because there has not been a class graduated from the Utah campus. This is only the second year w/ the South Jordan Campus.


USN is great to work with. I am married and have 3 kids and work. It is very hard at times to make time for it all, but the school is great to work with and the faculty are very helpful. My son has been in and out of the hospital for the last 2 months spending about 3 weeks in the hospital. I missed a lot of class and some of my IPPE rotations, the faculty have been great to help me stay on top of it all. I have taken tests at different times, had the faculty make sure that I understand the stuff I missed and have been willing to spend one on one time to catch me up. Not every school would care about my personal situtation and go out of their way to help.

I was accept to other schools, and I didn't have pharmacy experience except for shadowing. USN is not the only school that excepts candidates without experience. I am very glad that I decided to go with USN.

Check USN's last year thread. Many members posted their interview dates. I think the interview will start in Jan, right after the deadline.
