USPHS options during residency

I'm hoping to match into pediatrics this year, and very interested in the USPHS. I was just wondering if there were any options of working with the USPHS during residency, or is it something I have to become apart of after residency? Thanks!

Not sure if you could squeeze this in before May as an elective or during vacation. The "qualifications" description includes medical students, but the intro paragraph doesn't mention medicine. Let us know what you find out.
