Currently holding acceptances to both programs and just wanted to get some thoughts from other people. Thankfully this is not a battle of locations since both programs are in the TMC in Houston. I would appreciate any insight or feedback anyone is willing to offer!

McGovern (Location: TMC in Houston)
COA ~200K

Pros
  • Established Program
  • Larger class size (240) so more opportunities to find a group I relate to
  • Pass/Fail first semester before transition to H/HP/P/F
  • Connected well with the faculty I interviewed with

Cons
  • Get lost in the crowd with a class size of 240
  • Seemed super chill on interview day, but talked to a student and seems like cliques can be an issue sometimes

Texas A&M EnMed Program (TMC in Houston)
COA ~225K

Pros
  • Small cohort (~30-35) so more attention from the administration
  • Faculty is very supportive and personable
  • Engineering coursework could bring unique element to residency app and wider assortment of opportunities
  • Two degrees for the same cost (MD and MS in Engineering)

Cons
  • Small cohort
  • Limit on free electives due to completing engineering coursework in the 4th year
  • H/P/F day one

If you really have an interest in engineering medicine I really can't think of a better place to be! location is the same so it's really up to what you want to do. Both places match well but being in Enmed is a very very rare aspect of any residency application and also opens a ton of doors to different things you can do in medicine. Congrats on both!

EnMed has not had a class match yet I thought?

OP, I am probably wrong but from your post it makes it sound like you're pursuing the engineering because it might look good on a residency app? If that's the whole reason, then I'd go to McGovern. But if you can envision what an engineering masters would do to enrich your future medical career, then EnMed sounds like a good opportunity.

Residency is not the reason I applied to the engineering program. Just a pro that was highlighted by faculty that I hadn’t previously considered so I included it on the list. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Man, your votes are not helping you at all. Both schools would be lovely. I voted EnMed just because I've been working with a lot of engineer-physicians recently and it is just fascinating to see the way they solve problems in the medical field. Definitely a set of skills I wish I had, a language that is lost on me. I also think small class size has been nice at my school. It seems like that is something you might also value.

Of course there will be pros and cons for large and small settings for both schools. It would make sense that with a larger class size more cliques form, and I don't think you'll see that as much at Enmed.

I think this is a decision for you of whether not you want a large or small class, what environment do you see yourself more successful? Do you think you'll need the guidance and increased support at Enmed or are you okay with going out of your way to network for the millions of opportunities at McGovern? Also is the MS in engineering that important to you? MMS does have an MS degree plan as well but I don't think it is in engineering.
