Hi everyone,

Applications begin today for UT Memphis (not AADSAS), but it does not seem to be working right now. Anyone else having an issue? Thanks!

UT Memphis doesn't use AADSAS?

This is news to me 😕

Correct, they have a link to apply online at the school's website. But, I haven't been able to apply all day. Just wondering if anyone else is having the same problem.

Website: https://oracle.uthsc.edu/w042_utape_index.php?ses_test=pass

Looks like the drop down menu is not working; so your situation is not unique (as you probably gathered already). It could be that they are doing last minute maintenance and are just delayed.

I emailed them and they sent me back this "Thanks for your interest. There have been problems. Try again toward the end of the week. Dr. Wisdom Coleman"

Great, thanks for the info!

Well, the application is up and running now... pretty pathetic. Only took me 20 minutes to complete with TWO EXCEPTIONS!!! What the heck is up with the personal statement?!?!? MIN-4,000 Characters (w/o spaces) MAX-16,000(w/o spaces). Really?!? I mean I know this counts as a secondary as well so I planned to add in WHY I want to go to UT, but that is soooo much longer than what AADSAS requires(4500 WITH SPACES).

Here I have been slaving away for a month writing a perfect personal statement and now I have to just add a bunch of 'fluff' to it to get it up to the character limit.... really frustrating! Then the second weird part is the activities list where you are limited to 1200 characters! Do you guys plan on making a list with descriptions or what? AADSAS allows 10 ECs with 175 Character limit for each. Then there is some membership section...I'm not even sure what to put here... most of my memberships count as ECs! They don't even have a place for dental experience! Weird application!

Could they not have proofread the application for grammatical errors? I saw 3 blatant ones just skimming through! Sorry just really aggravated..

Ugg, frustrating!

I plan on using the UT application system also.

It looks like submitting everything ASAP may not be in my best interest. I'm going to have to carefully look through the application before I submit.

 I applied last year and at the bottom of the page it said last updated 2003. I doubt they are doing updates. They just do things a little differently over there. Also, keep in touch with the school because they will not tell you when something is missing. You may have to call 3-4 times until you get someone or receive a call back. If you have any other questions do ask. Although I am not attending the school, I can help out with the application process because I spent the most time on it and had the most questions concerning it.
*They also do not use e-mail. Everything is through snail mail and phone*

Omg, I feel like not even applying there anymore 😛

I may contact you for help, thanks 🙂

I know how you feel. I almost didn't finish my application after seeing everything it required. You have to get signatures from all the dentists you shadowed verifying your time there and signatures from superiors verifying all the service you have done. PS is an extra paragraph and EC's, awards, research, etc are to be written in one giant space. It's up to you to organize it.

WHAT?

Signatures from all dentists and superiors? 😕😱😕

As if signed LORs aren't enough? :smack:

What happens if a persona volunteered at 15 organizations and did 2 overseas missions trips where their supervisor was half way across the world.

Nuts.

when is the deadline? and how much was the application fee?

Guess you would have to call and see what they say. I just know they wouldn't review my app. until I had the signatures in.

In all seriousness, I think I'm going to forgo applying there if they require those mundane hoops that (virtually all) other schools don't require.

I don't have those facts on me right now. They suggest that all in-state applicants have their applications in before November. As for the deadline, you want to apply before December. I don't know when they close though. The fee was between 75$-90$. I forget. You have to have your DAT scores specifically sent to them. So if you didn't include TN when you registered for the DAT, you will have to add them for an additional 25$ on the ADA webpage .

Depends on your desire to attend the school. It was in my top 4, so I toughed it out. Your avatar is the Twins, you from MN? If so, do you have any connections to the school? There OOS students are comprised mostly of bordering SE states. They hold roughly 15 seats for AR and a handful of seats for other OOS's.

So, would my work experience as an RDH need to be included on the form? It says to circle "volunteer" or "salaried." I'm not sure exactly what needs to be included on the form.

I did not have to send in any form verifying work experience. Just volunteer.

Yeah, I'm from MN.

I have some ties to the school, but nothing that is surefire to get me an interview and acceptance.

Tennessee is one of my last school choices, hence my thought to forgo applying there (since other school are requiring my more immediate attention).

Not sure yet though, I may still apply to TN, but it certainly won't be during the opening week.

Had a couple more questions for UT's confusing application....

For the activities section are you guys listing them in chronological order or in order of importance?

Are you listing times served and hours?

I am having a lot of problems with this section because I have already taken off 3 scholarships and 5 co-curricular activities and the hours served for each and I am STILL over on characters!

Since it doesn't cut you off or even allow you to review your app the way it will look to them, do you know if the short answer sections count characters WITH spaces or without? The personal statement section is w/o so I figured the others were too.

I really wish they had instructions....or people who knew the answers when you call the help number.

I was told memphis' app began july 1st by the secretary, not june

That sucks. UT is high on my list, but I'm not sure I can grab a couple of them, since a few have relocated to other states (particularly in the military and VA). I got letters of recommendation from a few dentists that can be used, but I've been told that none verify how much shadowing/volunteering I've done at their particular clinic. Very lame how they require all that documentation...Gonna have to think hard about applying to this program - it's going to be hard to pass on it. I guess I'll call the school to better understand their position.

Just a heads up. I sent in my application a month ago and called about 2 weeks ago to verify everything, and they hadn't even started processing my application. They said they had switched companies that handle their application fees and had no record of my payment. So I had to forward them the confirmation email I had received.

Yep, they are switching everything over. I can't log in to my app with my original login. Arghh...

Also y'all should know....

Dr. Coleman has been out for over a month due to health problems...so the whole admissions scene is a little crazy right now

Dr. Wisdom Coleman passed away last night after a long hard battle with his health.
