I am in the UT-Memphis preliminary medicine program. It is great program with varied pathology and attendings very interested in resident education. We basically rotate at 3 different hospital within a couple of minutes of each other in downtown Memphis to get a broad learning experience. We have Methodist University which is a private hospital, the VA hospital, and the Med which is the county hospital. The patient population is typical for what you would expect at each respectively. There is night float at the Med and the VA so your call ends at 7pm. No night float at Methodist yet--you will typically have 5-6 overnight call there. You get 2-3 electives as a Categorical PGY1, 4 as PGY2, and 7-8 as PGY3. As a Prelim, you get 3-4 Electives. Categoricals get the MedStudy Books and have a curriculum for going through the entire series over the year each year so you will have gone through them 3 times by the time you take your boards. Prelims can also attend the MedStudy sessions to prepare for Step 3 or to just enhance their knowledge but their attendance is not required. Book fund is I believe $1000 for categoricals and $100 for Prelims. You get a subscription to uptodate.com for free. You also get 6 lab coats and 2 sets of scrubs free. Parking is free and meals are provided on call. Cost of living is extremely low in Memphis and it is no problem to afford a home as a PGY1. Electives are also offered at Baptist Hospital (another private facility) if you want. You have clinic 1/2 day a week at either the Med or Methodist. I hope this helps.
Yes, we have a Hospitalist Track, Primary Care Track, Women's Health Track, and 21st Century Scholars Program in which you get a Master's in Epidemiology.
