Anyone know if the Neuro program in Austin will be Southwestern or stay UTMB? I haven't heard any news one way or the other... (It would be in the ranking). Hopefully it is Southwestern because Austin + UT Southwestern = Awesome!

Not true. All current residents will immediately transition to UTSW if the deal goes through, so many people would start at UTMB and graduate from UTSW. I have been in the meetings of deans and faculty discussing this.If you enter the program, most likely you will graduate as UTMB. UTSW at Austin is being grown from the bottom-up. The institutions will co-exist (just as Baylor and UT-Houston did; or Cleveland Clinic and Case) even within the same hospital. Sorry, no extra brownie points.

Formal announcements have not been made but department heads from Dallas will be in Austin this month to begin researching how to transition people and facilities - Magic 8 Ball says, "All signs point to yes." Not definite, but looks good.
The difference in this case is that UTMB is pulling out of GME in Austin. They will no longer have a presence there in order to continue supporting residents who started at UTMB-Austin. The residents will become "employees" of the private hospital system that leases the teaching hospital from the county, and their sponsoring institution will (presumably) become UTSW. This is in keeping with the custom of UTSW - in Dallas, residents are employed by and paid by Parkland Hospital, but are educated by UTSW.Politics are inherently unpredictable. At one point, when I was a Med Student, Baylor and UT-Houston had separate students and residents co-exisiting at Ben-Taub and other Harris County hospitals. Eventually, they partitioned the hospital district. That is the precedent that I quoted. I do not have insider information from the UTSW deal.
I wouldn't count on graduating as UTSW resident if you started as UTMB resident. Residencies are able to change allegiances, but ultimately it requires review and approval by ACGME. It is a lenghty process despite that both schools are within the UT system.
Just to add to the discussion. All applicants to UTMB Austin IM residency (I interviewed there for prelim year) received the following email (dated Feb 18):
"At present we are in negotiations with UTSW for transfer of the sponsorship of
the graduate medical education programs in Austin. We expect this to happen
July 2009 or at the latest, the summer of 2009. The residents and the faculty
will be paid by the hospital, but resident and faculty appointments will be
with UTSW. Faculty will also be appointed under UTMB, because a cohort of
medical students from Galveston will continue to receive clinical training in
Austin. I expect that each team will have medical students. "
Sorry, I'm just the messendger, I'm a psych resident. You might want to call Dr. Camp directly.
How will this affect residents? Is it an improvement because now you would graduate with the 'UT-Southwestern' diploma? Or is there going to be a difficult transition and a possible move down to Dallas? UTMB-Austin was one of my top choices, but I'd really like to know what this will do to the Neurology program...
