Utah ER

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd like to know this too. LDS Hospital, does that have a residency program for Emergency? Now that's a great ED. 🙂

LDS, No. UU, maybe next year. I don't believe they have been given green light from what I've heard thru res. director grapevine.

Please keep us posted about UU, everyone!

Hi SDNers -

I am a member of the faculty at U. of Utah, and I am happy to tell you all what is up with Utah. We officially applied for a 3 year EM residency in March of this year, and had an RRC site visit in July. We are awaiting the RRC's decision regarding approval of our program, and should know more after the RRC meets near the end of September.

If we are approved this year, we will start accepting applications as soon as we get the word (late September or early October). We will not able to be a part of ERAS this year, but if we are approved, we plan to be part of the NRMP Match. If we are approved at the September meeting, we will start our first class in July 2005. If we are approved by the RRC to start a residency this year, we will be at the ACEP residency fair in October.

The curriculum for the program involves rotating through four different hospitals in Salt Lake, and would include emergency medicine rotations at U. of Utah, LDS hospital, Primary Children's Medical Center, and the VA hospital. There would be trauma rotations at the U. of Utah and LDS (both Level 1 trauma centers). Pediatric trauma experience would occur while rotating at Primary Children's Hospital, also a level 1 trauma center.

Please notice the large number of "ifs" and "woulds" in this email, and remember that we do not yet have approval, and will not know anything further until after the RRC meeting near the end of September.

As soon as we have any official notification from the RRC (yes or no) I will post it here.

This is the Place!

I am wondering if they will be doing externships for fourth year medical students at those sites as well. I would really like to do an EM rotation at Primary Children's or the U. of Utah. I would probably do it some time in the fall of 2006. When I was 13 and my brother was 7 he was hit by a truck and lived for three months at Primary Children's. Completely recovered. That place is great--it's what made me want to go into medicine in the first place.

There is already an externship available to fourth year medical students in the emergency departments at U. of Utah and LDS. There is an additional EM externship available at Altaview hospital, a local community ED. There are not currently medical student rotations available at Primary Children's Emergency Department, but the Peds ED folks have been talking about this for awhile.

If you are interested in doing an externship at one of the ED's that already have a student rotation available, you can contact Margie Thompson in the office of student affairs for an application. You can email her at [email protected]. For more information about visiting student externships, you can also find information at the student affairs website:

Thanks,

I was looking at the list of available away rotations on the SAEM medical student site and they didn't show anything for Utah, so I wasn't sure if Utah offered any. I will definately look into doing a rotation at one of those sites.

Thanks for telling me, I have added the info about our medical student rotation to the SAEM site.

Also, we have been approved by the RRC to start a program next year (July 2005), and I just started a new thread that contains some more details. Check it for details, and how to find out more information.
