I got the email today telling me to fill out the secondary and have it back in 45 days. but i logged into the website and there's nothing there. just some bloody checkboxes next to the required materials. it makes no sense. where the hell do you find these forms they're talking about? and what's up with 6 LORs? I swear they do that just as a way to weed folks out.

I am a Utah resident and I didn't bother applying there. Your woes are only just begginning. Do you realize there are only 10 openings for the hundreds of non-Utah/not-Idaho residents applying? Did you know that public education in Utah is dangerously underfunded, and always was even before the economy went down the crapper? The school is OLD ( read unsafe) and located right above the wasatch fault line. Many geologist expect an earthquake of an 8.0 magnitude when that one finally blows it's cork.
The six letters of recomendation are what capped it for me though. They love to weed out students, I finished my undergrad there. Let me say it again, they love to weed out students. I have never completed a single part of the application process where they were nice to me, until I told them I wasn't applying to their school. Save yourself some money, don't send in secondaries. You probably wont get in, and you don't want to anyway. Sorry if I sound pessimistic, I am honestly just trying to save you some money. PM me if you have more questions.

I'm also a resident of Utah and filled out the secondary in August. On the status page you refered to, there is a button that takes you to the secondary materials. You can fill them out in Adobe reader and then print for mailing.

I won't take the same stand as my Utah counterpart as I would love to go to the the U, but I will say, that Utah is a pretty undiverse place so the U of U, in order to get a more diverse class, seeks roughly 15 out of state students to achieve that goal. If you are a minority, you probably have a great shot at a spot.

In terms of the facilities, it's not Harvard or WashU, but the campus is nice and the facilities are much nicer than alot you will see elsewhere. Plus, if you are a snow skier, you're within 1/2 hour to a number of resorts!

Good luck

Jus to rebut some of the things that rgporter has stated.

The U Med school only receives about 3% of their funding from the state so this is of no conseguence to the overall structure of the school.

They are building a new state of the art Health Sciences education building that will be completed for the class of 2009. That means for class of 2008 you will have all your 2nd year classes in this building.

The research facilities at the U or some of the best in the country.

For some reason people become very disgruntled with the application process at the U but like anywhere else you simply have to jump through their hopes. If you want to go there then fill out the secondary. Once its complete and you meet the criteia stated on the website you will surely get an interview and it will be offered in a timely manner.

good luck

LOTS of hoops, in an effort to weed out BYU grads and keep the class "diverse". Ha.

I agree wholeheartedly, I'm glad I didn't get in and was accepted to a much better school!

There are actually 15-17 spots for out of state residents, plus 12 reserved for Idaho kids. Conure is right on that they are building a new Health Sciences building, where nursing and pharm students will also be located. Any state funded school is on tough times right now, but with the state funding so little of medical education here it is more or less a non-issue.

BTW, at least 25% of the class are kids from BYU. I find it hard to believe that some of you find that discriminatory. If anything, the fact that many kids that attend BYU are non-residents plays a large role in why they are not admitted. PLus, with an attitude like some of you have exhibited I sure as hell wouldn't want to go to class with you.

japhy, I thought the second part of your post was right on the money. It may be true that UofU is not "diverse", but how do they expect to make it when all that people hear is how bad UofU and Utah is. U of U will be one of my top choices. I like the area, have lots of friends in the area, and one of my LOR is comming from the former dean of ENT med. at UofU🙂

uli2000,

feel free to email me with any questions you may have about the school or the area. I have absolutely loved going to school at the U. I love being able to go for a bike ride in the Wasatch right after class or go skiing or head to Moab... I could go on and on. The dean's office is incredible, they truly bend over backwards to help students suceed. The diversity issue is always there. I admire the minority and women students who make the effort to make the school more diverse and in so doing, a better place. Good luck applying.

I interviewed at the University of Utah and it is a very nice school. The secondary may be a pain, but I think it is well worth it. Getting 6 letters of reccomendations shouldn't be too difficult if you are a friendly person. Even though I have been accepted at some out of state schools, I was pleasantly surprised. I would also encourage any women to apply to Utah. On the day I interviewed, there were hardly any women applicants, which made me feel a little uncomfortable, however the school and students were very welcoming and open.
