I matched last season and interviewed at both programs. Both are good programs, but UTenn, in my opinion is one of the strongest programs in the Southeast. Its up there with UAB in my mind for sure.
USF is a solid program though. Some strengths I remember. It had very freindly residents and faculty. Very non-malignant environment. Strongest VA I saw on the trail. Very high volume, very well organized, nice facility (its actually a separate building from the hospital.) You can moonlight at the VA on the weekends in the eye clinic and make a good amount of money.
UTenn I remember being a very strong program. The eye institute is very newly rennovated. Deep faculty in all subspecialties. Especially strong in plastics, peds. New relationship with the Charles retina institute (Dr. Charles invented the modern vitrector, I think, and still works there). Very nice wet-lab with a dedicated instructor and curriculum. One of the top in the country for trauma numbers, plastics numbers (according to their power point). I think the fact that its in memphis kinda keeps it a "hidden gem" sorta program. Overal I was suprised how strong this program was that I hadn't really heard much about before.....
