I am also in a very similar position. I have finally narrowed my choices to UNTHSC and UTHSCSA.
Even though UNT is a new program, I think that they will be a extremely strong program and thought they had the nicest PT facility in the state. I also love Ft. Worth.
I felt a great rapport with the students and facility at UTHSCSA. I also love that they give another antomy class during the last semester, this is something that many other PTs have said is something that they would have loved to have had. I really enjoyed my visit to SA.
I think both schools have good connections but that UTHSCSA will have a greater variety of clinical oppurtunities.
Would really love to hear from someone who has visited both schools but any extra opions or experiences shared would be appreciated.
I know a little bit about UTHSCSA that I will share, but I know nothing about UNTHSC since it's a new program. Something to think about is how new UNTHSC is - have they worked out the "kinks"? Lots of practicing PTs have gone through UTHSCSA's curriculum, and the program is CAPTE accredited. UNTHSC has not yet received accreditation. That doesn't mean UNTHSC won't be accredited by the time you graduate, but UTHSCSA is for sure - current through 2019.
UTHSCSA does offer a great selection of clinical rotations. You are required to have a rotation in ortho, neuro and acute PT, with a 4th rotation of your choice, but you get a lot of say in what type of patient, setting, and location you want [pediatrics, geriatrics, inpatient, outpatient, San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Dallas, Ft Worth, Lubbock, and even Europe if you want to pay to go overseas (I know UTHSCSA students who went to England and Spain for clinicals)].
Having both anatomy review and differential diagnosis the last semester helps you get ready for the NPTE. UTHSCSA also provides a 2-day review class for the NPTE as part of the curriculum and gives the students an option of taking another, different 2-day review class on site (you have to pay for the 2nd one).
Hope this helps a bit.
