Help me decide between Tennessee and Virginia Tech please!

*UTHSC*

*Pros
- IS, so I can spend years 3/4 doing my clinical rotations in my home city
- IS tuition

*Cons
- In-house exams

*VTC*

*Pros
- NBME style exams during years 1/2
- Changing from 2 to 1.5 year preclinical years
- Have research integrated into curriculum very nicely (research is important to me)
- Their STEP 2 score average is above the national average and greater than Tennessee’s
- Great match rate, & students seem to match into more competitive residency programs

*Cons
- Would be away from home 4 years instead of 2

Other info:
UTHSC class size is ~175, VTC is ~50. I could see this being either a pro or a con depending on how you look at it.
Both schools have great residency programs and like to match their own students.

I thought the course finals at UT were NBME questions? That’s what they said when I toured there back in the day (not a student there, I’m probably wrong).

They both sound like great options honestly. In-state tuition is a big deal; I’d probably go to Tennessee over VA for that reason. It’s not like you’re choosing between TN and Hopkins here, ya know? Paying private-school money for state-school prestige/resources is probably unwise.

Also, everyone i know at UT is happy.

Also, don’t underestimate the value of being near family. When you’re far from home (like me), it’s basically impossible to find time to go home for family events.

Thank you! And yes it’s sooo hard to decide between two really comparable schools

Pick Tennessee. VTC has a research focus but Tennesee is higher ranked and will give you those opportunities if you need.

Hey! Sorry I just found this thread but wanted to see if you ultimately chose UTHSC, and if so, are you happy with your decision? Thank you!
