Who is choosing UTSA as there first choice? I am still undecided between TCOM and UTSA. Right now it is a tie between TCOM and UTSA for first followed by A&M then Tech then UTMB. Unfortunately, I didn't get any love from UTH and I didn't apply to SW for some silly reason. I like UTSA for the students, the faculty, the campus and University Hospital. I am a paramedic for AMR in SA so I know that we have some awesome hospitals in the medical center. I don't like UTSA because I grew up in SA and I am starting to think that the city kind of sucks (except for the Spurs and of course my friends). I like TCOM because of the Students, the faculty, and the DFW area. I am not sure about the clinicals because they never really went into detail about their clinical sites. Plus, as I mentioned in another thread, I have been told by several people to go MD if I have the opportunity. I just want some opinions from fellow applicants and also students fron these two schools. Also, if there are any med. students out there that can tell me how much of your 4th year can be spent out of state at these 2 schools that would be cool. I just have a strong desire to get out of TX and spend some time up north so I would probably choose a school that allows you to spend a lot of time out of state. Thank you and sorry for such a long question.

Rank the schools you like the very best first. Don't worry about what others think about MD vs. DO. TCOM is a great school, that is what I got from interviewing there. If you wouldn't mind primary care, then I wouldn't worry about having a DO.

I think so. Does anyone know for sure? Maybe go to the ER forum here, there are several DO's that are residents, they might be able to answer your question better.

I dont' believe that technically EM is primary care. But I think alot of people do consider it primary care.

Ummmm??? I agree with you TOTALLY!!! I just bought a house here and my wife just started a job here in SA. If it wasn't for those two things...I'd probably have put TCOM ahead of SA.
I am tired of the city also. Besides getting all the Spurs games on TV every night I can't think of what else is that great about it. If I was single...I sure as hell would not want to go to school here! The night life sucks compared to...well...everywhere else! Tech rocks even though its in Lubbock, UTMB is so close to all that Houston has to offer plus the fraternities there, TCOM & UTSW are in an awesome singles city along with UTHouston and Baylor! A&M has College Station which is a great college town and 1.5 hours from everywhere.
I KNOW SA and there isn't jack to do if you are single in this town and the great majority of the city barely got outta high school! So unless you plan on dating your classmates and the nursing students...well...good luck!!!
If I am lucky and end up staying in SA for school, I will definately plan on rotating as much as possible outside of SA and definately going outta state for residency!
I think TCOM and FW are totally cool and I have stated here before that I wish TCOM was in SA...or more clearly, that I didn't have all the committments I have here in town that keep my ranking the way it is. I just don't want to deal with the huge headache of trying to sell my house, buy a house, fix it up, move all my stuff, look for a job/church/friends/gym...ect......total hassle! So, for me, I am staying put if I am lucky...but at least you know why.🙁

STAC, your absolutely correct!!!!! So were you interested in being a DO before you started the application cycle or did TCOM just catch your interest during the interview? I want to do emergency med so I think that either UTSA or TCOM would serve me well. TCOM is in a nice area and the students and faculty seem to be really happy and friendly. I guess one advantage of living in SA is the fact that it is relatively close to Austin (but so is A&M). I have another complication that just came up recently. I just met a young lady over the Christmas holidays that is going back to University of Tennessee for one last semester to finish her architecture degree. In May, she will come back and is pretty much set with a great job in SA. I haven't know her that long but she is pretty cool and there is no way she would be able to move anywhere if she gets the job in town. The thing is, I would feel like a complete idiot if I decide to stay in town and she finds someone else up at school or things don't work out during my first semester of school and I am stuck in a city that I really wanted to leave. Why do women always seem to cloud my thinking?!!! +pissed+ . Sorry, just venting my frustrations.

Uhhh...don't even get me started about dating and women. But dude! You are the man! Be a man!

To answer your question about DO's...I have always been interested in being a DO. I believe in the unique philosophy and approach to medicine and treating patients. OMM is a healing tool that in my opinion is valid and incorporates touch in a formal manner in a field that tends to ignore its importance. I would have no problem whatsoever being a DO. I was very, very impressed by TCOM. If its meant to be its meant to be, but I have already explained my reasons for my rankings. If not SA,and I have to move anyway,...I'm going to Fort Worth first.

If you want to go into EM, you'll get your residency not matter where you go to school...in my humble opinion.
Buenas suerte con las chicas muchacho! Con cuidado!

i have read that DOs get paid about 10,000 less at alot of residency programs compared to their MD colleagues. Whats up with that? In fact i read that some Do EM resident makes like 32 Gs while the MD colleagues make like 40. Dont know if thats true, but I feel that DOs dont get the same treatment even in primary care.

Im not sure, but u might wanna check it out, also, a 4th year at TCOM told me to pick an MD program because he said it was alot harder to get residency because preference given to MDs still.

U might not care about this, but for those that dont know, just letting u know that in my opinion i would go with san antonio. Location wouldnt be an option if it were these 2 choices.

sorry if i offended an pro DO people out there, TCOM is great but students have more advantages at san antonio, which has a better reputation and is in the top tier of med school in texas behind the tier that contains baylor, southwestern.

also let me say this:

there are going to be cool people and faculty everywhere so that shouldnt be a big deal.

u can spend up to 12 weeks out of ur med school and do rotations anywhere ur 4th year so that shouldnt be a problem either.

man to be honest, as a med student i like UTMBs curriculum. I think going to class all day is a big waste of time. I feel that the material is too much to have all that class and then go home to learn it. I think UTMBs schedule is like ur done by 12 so thats how i feel it should be. I dont know about SA or TCOM or the other schools but thats pretty important. I feel that too much time is wasted learning low yield stuff in class and students should have more time to learn or digest the material on their own time.

if i wre to rank ur schools, i would pick, SA or UTMB or UT-houston as ur first, second, third choice. Then Tech, then A&M, then TCOM.
thats my opinion based on what i've heard from alot of academic physicians.

However, man, pick whats best for u, i'm jst telling u my views and trying to keep it as real as possible. TCOM is a great school and many DOs have matched into opthamology and compettive residencies so if u work hard anywhere u should be ok. U are going to get a great education anywhere, and u will love the expereice at any of the texas schools. Im just giving u my opinion.

peace

I believe your information is incorrect. They would get paid the same within the same residency program.

I was actually under the impression that TCOM WAS actually ranked higher than San Antonio.

TCOM is ranked higher than San Antonio. But San Antonio has a better reputation in terms of residency. This is a general statement and it was told to me by one of the admissions guys at UT Southwe stern and he was telling me the tiers of med schools in texas. The chair of Oncology at another med school basically told me the same thing. so just letting u know that what these people look at when selecting residents for their programs. Sadly to say, repuations of programs do matter.

For example, I am at texas tech. Someone at san antonio w/ the same stats may have the edge cuz san antonio has a better rep.
thats what i am saying, i hope i cleared that up.

As far as DOs getting less than MDs in residencies, Check out the Emergency Medicine Forum, there was a thread about this differnce in salary i beleive at the EM residency program at Tampa.
so i do think MDs get higher salary than DO, then after residency DO or MDs salaries may vary or one may make more than the other. But again, I might be mistaken, so be sure to check that out.

peace

Omar
