😕 😕 😕
Hey Guys-

Here's a San Antonio specific thread.

I have a couple of questions.

1) Has anyone received specific instructions concerning immunizations? I've received my financial aid packet and the whole scrub/computer/background check packet.

2) What type of containers should I provide to dentists that have agreed to collect extracted teeth?

Thanks.

I recieved a letter requesting immunizations about 3-5 weeks prior to recieving the welcome packet you described. So, I'm assuming you must have missed some correspondence.

Good to meet my classmates! Hope more people start contributing to this thread quickly. In the letter they sent with that info packet, they described the containers and solutions you need to store your teeth in. I would imagine that the container should be anything specifically designed for biohazardous waste (ie: leakproof and clearly marked with biohazard tape or labels).

As for the immunizations, there were a few listed on the letter they sent out a couple of months ago, and I'm sorry, but I don't have the letter with me right now... otherwise I would give you a complete list. But I do know that the Hep B vaccine needs to be started a few months in advance. There are 3 series of shots you'll need to get for that one. The second is 3 months after the first, and the 3rd is about 2 months after the second. I talked to San An, and they said that all three shots had to be completed by the time school starts. If you've had the series within the last 10 years, you should be ok, so check your records, but you'll need to get an antibody test to prove that you still have resistance. If you havn't started the series yet, I would call the school ASAP and ask them what you'll need to do. Take care! Looking forward to meeting everyone at orientation!

So glad to know few more future classmates. I've almost done with the required immunizations. Those shots are:

1. Hepatitis B ( deebog01 already explained so well - thanks dan 🙂
2. Tuberculosis
3. Varicella (chicken pox)
4. Diptheria-Tetanus
5. Measles
6. Mumps
7. Rubella

Recommended shot: Meningitis

For most of us, we only need Hepatitis B and TB skin test. We have received other shots during the past.

Take care everyone. I'm so excited to meet all of you in July. Have fun 🙂

:luck:

Ok... biochem question applicable to the posted chapter 3 notes:

Why doesn't the Henderson-Hasslebach equation apply to pure solutions of weak acids or conjugate bases? Does it have something to do with HA dissasociation being too insignificant?

Thanks alot for you help,
Dan

Thanks.
An empty mayonaise, pickle jar, jelly jar, jam jar, olive jar, jalepeno jar, bannana pepper jar, or any other glass, plastic, or ceramic jar.

hey dan i took a mathmatical approach to this and if you have the two extremes of the acid or base then you would have a concentration of 0 or close to 0 for lack of the conjugate... therefore you cant divide by 0 and you cant take the log of 0. The equation works the best near equilibrium as it is in physiological conditions (when pK~pH).

If anyone going to San Antonio is still looking for housing, I may have something for you. I am a 2004 UTHSCSA graduate and I still own my house in San Antonio from medical school. My renter has just graduated from nursing school and is leaving for Utah. I posted an ad in the classified section.

Also, if you have any questions about UTHSCSA or San Antonio, or anything else for that matter, let me know.

When I entered dental school, I paid out the nose to get properly immunized; however, much to my dismay, the school will offer immunis for really cheap (hep b for $5). So if you can't get it done before school, you definitely won't be the only one - and you might save a few extra bucks if you wait and get immunized.

You will have to wait and get your hep b shots throughout the school year (there's three in total if I remember correctly), but if you're only getting shots now, then you'd have to be getting it done during school anyways.

good luck you all, feel free to pm me with any specific sa-town questions... cheers maties - it's a great school and while you'll have to put up with some inconveniences while they work on the labs, it'll be worth it.
