I chose to live at home (about 45 mins from campus) and so I have quite the commute. We also just started our immuno, micro, (basic/general) path, and pharma unit. I was thinking of listening to Goljan lectures during my commute, but I don't know which ones would be beneficial to me at this point. Can you guys point me in the direction of the lectures that correspond to these subjects (immuno, micro, path, pharm)? If Goljan wouldn't be worth listening to at this point, what do you think are some other ways I can best maximize my nearly two hours spent in the car every day? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, I've been wondering which flashcards are the best to invest in for micro and pharm review. Are there any brands more suggested than others?

EDIT - I guess what I'm really asking is: can someone help me to gain familiarity on the subject distribution of Goljan lectures? I've heard many times on SDN and on campus that Goljan is really good, especially for board studying, but I don't know how to use his lectures yet. What's the basic method most people use? How useful can the lectures be during first-year classes?

Goljan won't be useful at all until second year since you won't cover that stuff until then. It's mainly systemic pathology, so it's good to use Goljan as you go through the systems. I'd say use the time to focus on learning your class material, but if you really want to you can also read the corresponding sections in First Aid to review your class material.

I would recommend using podcasts from your first year courses if possible. The best board prep is learning second year material to the best of your ability. First year is obviously important to build a foundation for second year...

Ya, save goljan audio till 2nd year when you are learning path.

It depends, some schools cover some stuff found in Goljan first year. You can take a listen and see if any of the material is relevant to what you are covering in class.

I think more and more people (especially as more schools switch to systems based) are getting exposed to path in the first year.

I am a first year, and we are doing all of our normal with path. Ie. we don't repeat systems second year.

As for Goljan, listen to what you think is applicable to what you are studying. When we did endo. I listened to the endo lecture - etc.

Thanks for the input, y'all. My school provides mp3s of each lecture, so I guess I can start listening to the ones I'm having trouble with. But for Goljan, is there a way I can know what's lectured on other besides randomly playing a file and hoping it's relevant to what you're studying?

There's a list of topics for each lecture somewhere out there.

Yeah Google Goljan lectures and you'll find it in some random USMLE forum.

SDN is pretty strict on copyright infringment and since there is no legally obtainable version of the Goljan lectures around here its like fight club:

The first rule of Goljan is not to talk about Goljan
The second rule is not to talk about Goljan.

I think goljan is especially useful if you use it in concert with Robbins Pathology and the Robbins question book.

Of course that's a lot of work, but no other way to do it thoroughly I guess.

Does anyone know how many lectures there are in these miscreants' copies? Not that I'm one of them and am curious if my set is complete or anything...

Choose whatever resources work for you. Your grade on exams will give you an idea as to whether your approach is working.
