Current or graduate students from UTMB Galveston, what won you over about the OT program as opposed to other Texas OT programs?

I did not give it much attention due to the location and concern for natural disasters, but the program itself is becoming more appealing to me than other programs. I have been doing my research on Texas OT programs, but I am still indecisive.

Thanks for the input! I look forward to your opinions!

Has anyone received an interview invitation yet?

I just got an email from UTMB saying they'll be sending out emails the first week of December for interviews and admission declines, and expected interview dates are 1/15 and 1/22. Looks like we'll be waiting another month.

I am a current graduate OT student at UTMB. I absolutely love it here. I feel so lucky that I picked this school over other Texas schools. This school is very interpersonal - there are many opportunities to work with the other health professions. There are also so many volunteer opportunities where you get to work hands on with the community and practice your OT skills starting in your first semester here. UTMB also has a hospital on campus so you can imagine just how many opportunities there are to shadow, volunteer, or observe here. The faculty is very hands on and interactive with us. They will not let you fail out of this program. You have faculty mentors, and all of the faculty is on campus and easy to get in touch with - and always excited to help if anything is needed. I wouldn't worry about the natural disasters. The weather is usually fine and even with heavy rain it's usually not a big deal. Plus it's nice to be a short walk away from the beach when classes get stressful! Let me know if you have any specific questions!

Thanks for the response! I feel reassured. I took a tour a couple weeks ago for open house. The campus is gorgeous! Also, I LOVE the community involvement the program offers. I'm especially interested in the St. Vincent Clinic!

St. Vincent's is amazing. We all love it. It's great practice and it helps the community.

Does anyone know of any online classes for the Neurological Basis for Human Behavior prerequisite?

Have you heard anything from UTMB? I got the same email but anticipated an email earlier this week and am super anxious.

congratulations! Which date did you pick? I selected the 15th. Have an interview in GA on the 22nd. I think your numbers sound about right. Texas schools cost very little compared to other states at least that's what I've seen...

I was notified Friday that I have an interview with UTMB and I am excited since it is my preferred school!
Do you have any specific tips for the interview process?
Are we supposed to bring anything with us?
Is the group interview a panel of interviewers or multiple candidates?

Well that is encouraging! I picked the 22nd — I have a concert I really don't want to miss on the 15th. Best of luck!!

Yay that's awesome! Congratulations 🙂 The interview process really isn't bad. I practiced a lot before with professors at my undergrad school and that helped me. When we interviewed they split us up into two groups. One group did a writing section and one group did the verbal interview. I don't think you all will have the writing section since they asked for GRE scores. Our interviews were 1 on 1 with a professor. I'm not 100% sure if yours will be the same! My advice is to think about what OT is (holistic, helping profession with diverse founders) and think about how you fit into that picture. What do you have (skills/experiences) that is unique and will help you to be the best OT you can be? I think all I brought was a folder and a pen because they gave us a few papers. The professors here are amazing and during the interview they are mainly getting to know you. They aren't trying to weed people out during the interview process. If you got an interview - it's for a reason! 🙂 So just relax and be yourself. You'll do fine 🙂 Good luck!!

Thank you so much!! You put my mind at ease! I'm really excited to be able to speak to current students as well🙂

Hey guys!
Who's interviewing this Friday the 15th? I'm flying from Reno, NV to interview with UTMB program. This is my first time in Texas and was wondering if anyone would like to explore the Galveston/Houston area the day before or after interviews with me. Planning to hit up all the touristy spots and to eat everything in sight lol. Let me know 🙂

@Chreez and @amyelizabeth have you guys recieved any more information about the time/place of the interview from Ms. McEachern? I am trying to be patient but I am eager to hear from her. I did confirm in December that I had an interview the 22nd.

I haven't heard anything :/ How about anyone interviewing tomorrow? Are there different sessions for morning/afternoon? I don't think it's a full day interview, right?

Just got an email that I was put on the wait list. Anybody else on the waitlist or get their acceptances?

I'm waitlisted too. Any idea on how many people they put on the list?

Got an acceptance email today! I'm so excited!! Anybody else?? Message me if your going for sure!

Got my acceptance email--I'm so excited!! Not sure where I'll be attending though. Most of my programs won't decide till march :/ any idea of when a deposit will be due?

I received my acceptance as well and will definitely be attending! Has anyone started looking at apartments? I live out of state so I don't really know where to start looking!
I have looked some online but I feel like I need to look in person.. I am wanting to get an efficiency, but it really depends on what I can afford!

I've looked around but I really want to live with roommates so I'm waiting for the facebook group!

Has anybody received any follow up emails from Sharon since the acceptance email? I'm ready for more information! And I want to make sure I'm 100% so I can tell my other schools no!

Does anybody know about the Facebook group yet???

We are still waiting for people to confirm their acceptances. I promise you are not behind on anything. Everyone is in the same boat, and everyone will get their questions/concerns addressed soon.

Do you have any advice/suggestion for looking a place to stay?

Do any of y'all who interviewed with UTMB have any advice/tips? I have an interview coming up in January. Also, would anyone who got accepted feel comfortable sharing their stats? Just trying to figure out how much of a shot I have 🙂
