I'm very interested in matching at UTSW for ophthalmology for several reasons. Anybody here have any advice or experience with matching into the UTSW program? Someone told me they don't like away rotations but I'm not sure how accurate that info is. Thanks in advance.

No idea how to specifically match there but I can tell you that they seem relatively well respected among Ophthalmologists. Trauma volume and work hours are high compared to other Ophtho programs so perhaps showing very strong work ethic would help? Chairman is an abrasive interviewer so prepare for that. Still leagues away from the average gen-surg interview I imagine. Program Director is awesome, very friendly, and very personable. He really sold the program well and I imagine making a great impression on him would help you chances of matching there. They're a strong Southern program so I think they have their pick of some pretty competitive applicants. I think anything that can make you stand out above the crowd of applicants will help there especially. Dallas is a really fun city but also may be more expensive than other cities in the south so keep that in mind. If you're coming from Cali or NYC you'll think it's cheap.

Good luck with more specific advice! Sorry I can't offer more.

You should be posting these questions in the thread "OPHTHALMOLOGY PROGRAM COMPENDIUM", that way this info can be compiled in one location.

Do you work with Dr. Cavanagh at UTSW? I've never heard of a more controversial figure in medicine. While I don't know the truth about any of the claims about him, I've seen many other doctors have to quit medicine for far less. The fact that he's still a professor and kicking amazes me.

it's a very strong and well rounded program with great residency training. I think there's a bit of confusion about the away rotation. When they advice their own students, they generally tell them you don't necessarily need another away rotation. but if you're interest in the program, it's definitely a good idea to do a rotation there. they don't interview too many applicants for the number of spots they have so generally they interview applicants that either has a geographic tie or showed interest in the program. The chair cares a lot about his residents, he is just more blunt and old school, but actually a very nice guy. Finally, I don't really think Dallas is an expensive city at all. Nice 1 bedroom apts start at around 700 in the middle of the city, and real estate is also pretty affordable. But it is a more modern city as there are not too many historical places like the northeast.
