hi all,
can anyone give their thoughts on the program at UTSW. On the trail, one of the girls mentioned that the residents were not happy..anybody heard anything else?
thanks

a few thoughts.

there will be unhappy residents everywhere. i am a student at UTSW and i can say that there are plenty of very happy people here. with a program of almost 72 residents, the unhappy ones tend to make more fuss than the happy ones. the work is hard and you will likely be working very close to (but absolutely not over) 80 hours a week for the majority of the residency. but again, you are probably not scared to work if you are picking OB to begin with.

that being said, the faculty here have established themselves as some of the most supportive OB/GYN mentors anywhere in the country. the clinical volume and experience is unmatched by any program in the country. and for those naysayers who say that it is an OB heavy program (~16,000+ deliveries a year), many steps and new facilities have made the GYN experience much better than it used to be. their "numbers" are good and offer more than enough training to be a very, very well trained OB/GYN physician.

without a doubt, a resident from parkland hospital can handle pretty much anything under the sun by the time they've finished their training.

How can you get so close with 12 hour shifts and a night float? Was I misled on my interview when a resident said that there was no 24 hr call (just 12 hrs)???? Just wondering...

you're right about no overnight. OB/GYN at UTSW is one of the only residencies at Parkland where you get to go home once every day to sleep in your own bed. the only exception is your internal medicine month which is Q5.

let it be known that UTSW has a GREAT internal medicine program and that residents routinely say that OB/GYN interns are often the most talented and hard-working interns around.

anyway. i'm not sure how but 5 days of 14 hour shifts is already 70 hours. a little clean up work afterwards and you're in the mid 70s range. maybe not SUPER close to 80 but definitely in the low 70s range.

What about weekend call - on Saturday and Sunday. Doesn't night float end on thursday. If there's no 24hr call who covers for Friday and Saturday night?
Also, when is check out in the afternoon again? I think i remember that midwives cover for a certain amount of time.

Would you say that residents get enough GYN and laparoscopic procedures in? With the reputation of being OB heavy would you recommend that someone who is interested mostly in gyn surgery apply to your institution?

from what i recall from their presentation on interview day their gyn #'s for residents were b/ the 50-70th percentile. i don't have a number or percentile for laproscopic but i will try to find that out.
