Hello everyone,
I have been fortunate enough to receive an offer from UVA (with a ½ tuition scholarship) and OSU (full-tuition scholarship). I will need to decide between those offers by the end of this month. I also had a great interview at the University of Toronto (in Canada—I’m a dual citizen), and am expecting to hear back from them soon.
I am keenly interested in pursuing neurosurgery. I am looking for a medical school where I can get the best possible combination of medical school experience and opportunities to match to neurosurgery, train at a top-tier residency, and have good job prospects. Any insights, especially between UVA and OSU but also comparing both options to the University of Toronto, would be much appreciated!
University of Virginia
PROS:
· Had a great feeling at my interview—loved the atmosphere (UVA+Charlottesville)
· Great university and medical school
· UVA sports
CONS:
· Even w/ scholarship, most expensive option (as OOS, probably 30,000 a year for tuition alone)
· Not sure about hospitals—not as highly ranked/regarded as others??
Ohio State University
PROS:
· Full-tuition scholarship (cheapest option by far)!
· Wexner Medical Center is very good and students seem to have great clinical exposure
· OSU sports
CONS:
· OSU not as highly ranked or regarded as a medical school compared to other options
University of Toronto (Potential Acceptance)
PROS:
· Amazing university (best in Canada) + medical school + hospitals (Toronto General ranked #7 in the world)!
· Opportunity to work w/ amazing faculty, researchers, students, etc.
· Toronto is a vibrant city
CONS:
· Serious concerns over residency matching in competitive specialties in Canada and I am not sure about matching at US residencies??
Again, please advise. I would really appreciate any help.
