Sorry, not a premed here, just a high schooler looking at premed schools. I just wanted to hear current (maybe past) UVA students who did premed, and what they thought of their experience there. Was it good? I've been accepted to both Echols and College Science Scholars here and I'm considering going. (Ultimately I'd like to choose between here and UMD, my instate, but that's not too important here.)

Hi, I don't go to UVA, but I know a lot of people who do.

It's a very hard school academically. You will be very rigorously challenged. A lot of people who start out premed there get weeded out, and even of those who do end up applying, only 50-60% end up getting accepted. That being said, there are definitely success stories. I personally know people there who have been accepted to multiple top 10/20 schools and if you have a certain MCAT/GPA, you are virtually guaranteed an interview at UVA med (which means a basically guaranteed (~80%) acceptance in-state and a solid chance (~65%) out of state. The Echols program is a solid one, but I'm not sure how many advantages it confers other than housing.

Challenged? Or do you mean Challenging?

So it is hard to maintain a great GPA you mean? Obviously I'm up for the challenge (why aim for premed if I couldn't?), but are you saying that premed at UVA in particular seems harder than at other schools?

I go to UVA and successfully applied to medical school this past cycle. I absolutely love the school. Feel free to PM me with any questions.
