Am trying to decide between these two programs and would love your opinion on them. Am fairly undecided about my future, some interest in general med, ID or even public health/health policy work.

I know that some people peg UVA as being stronger, but are they in general comparable, or is UVA much stronger?

THANKS!

Public Health/Health Policy is presumably strong at GW with their elective time on Capitol Hill. My perception is that UVA is a stronger program overall though and has some good opportunities for international work that would probably suit your ID interests.

If you are interested in ID, then go to UVA. Strong ID division and history of renowned faculty (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=9192293&highlight=uva#post9192293). Also, a more reputable training program overall. I think this trumps the one month you would be able to spend on capitol hill as a GW resident.

good luck!

It is my understanding (coming straight from the PD's mouth at GW) that you can do the health policy elective once a year on capitol hill. So, its up to 3 months time during residency, not just 1 month. Not saying that puts GW above UVA as a training program, just clearing up that issue.

thanks for your input, dsprague. it's a tough decision because my family and i like DC better for living and i sort of liked the more relaxed atmosphere at GW, but UVA is a strong program as you say.

UVA is a stronger program than GW on a national academic level. UVA's residency adopts a similar system as Tulane, which is a real hidden gem among IM residency programs and is a very solid program in my opinion. To me, GW is a fairly straightforward program, but UVA mixes it up a bit.

GW may have better public health / health policy work, but it looks like you'll be a doctor first, and a health advocate second. Go with the stronger residency program.

Thanks for the thread.
