Hey there ,

I'm in a bit of muddle about the middle of my ROL and would appreciate peeps input of University if Virgina Vs. University of Massachussets. Uva has a bigger program and a bigger name, but Umass seemed to have a better academic profile with a great PD .(Im talking about Gen Adult Psychiatry)

Any thoughts??

I know who TJ would recommend:

Things I know about UVa:

1. Intern year approaches 80 hours on inpatient psych and IM.
2. Some months will involve a 1 hour drive to Staunton, Va (west of Cville)
3. Residents love the PD
4. UVa parking and surrounding traffic is fairly atrocious for such a small city
5. 2nd year resident I talked to is not sure how they are adjusting to new rules
6. Cville is a nice small town, but not the best place to be single
7. Decent mix of path, despite the small size, as UVa gets people from all over the state and West Va too. Also, the state facilities in Staunton have pretty severe path, especially the child facility, which is the only state child facility in Va, and sees kids from all over the state.
8. Warmer than Mass. If that's your thing
9. Despite the general lack of movie theatres, Cville has some damn good food. It can get a bit boring here, unless you like driving. We're about an hour from Richmond, ok skiing, good hiking, and fun river tubing. 2-3 hours to DC and the Beach. So, you quickly wind up wanting to go other places to hang out rather than here. Good that other places are so close, bad that theres not so much to do here besides shop in little mom-pop-hippie stores and eat.
10. $10 for each dictation finished on time (within 24 hours) while working in the UVA system (I.e. Not in Staunton). I hear you do about 7-10 of these per week, so you can add $70-100 to each week.

If you're wondering, I am a Cville native, 3rd year DO student. I'm hoping to wind up here in 2012, but mostly for family reasons, although I know it's a solid program. For myself, I'd rank it over every other place in the country (again, mostly for family and financial reasons), but I know all the UVa programs provide good training. That being said, I have no idea how it compares to UMass.

If you're reading this in spring 2012, please don't rank UVA, for my family's sake. You wouldn't like it anyways. 😉

Thank you guys!!
Anyone from UMass, Please?

Well, I know that John Adams went to Harvard, but he'd probably prefer UMass....😀

Of course, he'd probably want us to keep this in mind in regards to future intellectual pursuits:

"I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain."

I was wondering about this. Do you know how the public transportation is in the area? Can it get there? I am legally blind and cannot drive, so this is something I have to keep in the back of my mind while ranking programs. I interviewed at UVA.

I don't know much about the U. Mass general psychiatry program but I can tell you that their forensic fellowship is highly respected and considered one of the best.

Here is the website detailing the rotations:

It looks like you only "have" to do one month in Staunton (at either Commonwealth Center for Children or Western State).

That being said, you'd have to be able to get to UVA, Martha Jefferson, and Region 10 (or other community sites which are not listed) for many months during your training for sure. The UVa bus system works pretty well on University grounds, but the interface between it and the City/County bus system is problematic at best. It's possible, but it'd be a major PITA.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how you'd get to Staunton (pronounced "Stan-ton" here in the south) as there is no public system that I know of that gets out there. There's a chance you could carpool, maybe, but the resident that's working with me right now is the only one rotating out there, and that's probably the way it is.

I'd recommend calling the program and asking. It's possible I'm misinformed, as I'm not actually a student there, and I'm only reading this off their website, and from the one 2nd year resident I'm working with. Maybe they could make an accommodation?

Thank you all for the nuggets of info! Sure, was helpful

Seems like I'm late to the discussion, but UMass has a strong program, a well-respected and liked PD, and excellent subspecialty training in neuropsych and forensics. It is in Worcester though.

Thanks, DocSamson! I'm glad I moved UMass above UVa
