First off a little background on me, I have been checking this forum for a couple years now as i have been preparing to get back on the path to applying to Med School. I am 27 been working the last 5 years in both management and engineering. I graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering with a 3.81 gpa. I only need O-chem and Bio. I have quite a bit of volunteer experience both in and out of hospitals. I applied last year to only one program unsuccessfully (Bryn Mawr, probably not the best choice). This year i applied more broadly.
I currently have acceptances at Duquesne (Pittsburgh), Dominican (Chicago) and expecting one from UVM this week, (hopefully i didn't just jinx myself!!).
There is very little information about these programs on this forum but from what i can tell them all have their strengths and weaknesses. I am currently trying to decide between them.
University of Vermont: Its a formal program, 1 year, local (I live 2 blocks away), with a 3.5 in postbacc guaranteed an interview with UVM. Due to recently moving here, wont qualify in state, most expensive program.
Duquesne: Formal program, would apply to their dual masters which would allow more federal loans, located in Pittsburgh, close to home, have family working in local hospitals, cheap living, middle cost program. Linkage to Temple and LECOM but wont qualify to Temple because SAT's were below 1350. One local Medical School, University of Pittsburgh.
Dominican: Formal program, have seen mixed reviews, cheapest program per credit, have preceptoships available. Many local medical schools in the Chicago area. No linkages. Have to become used to a very large and new city.
I know this is a long post, but I know I am going to chose one of these programs to begin this fall and just trying to find the one that will best meet my goals. I know i can do well in the pre-req classes. Any I want to go MD, i know in the long run it is probably trivial about the difference in cost, but really it comes down to guaranteed interview at UVM but a very rural school. Pittsburgh, no guarantees but PA s my home stat and many schools and the cheapest. Or Chicago, which has the most local schools, and cheapest program but at the same time question there ability for placement.
Thanks for any advice!!
