Hi all!

I have been admitted by MS in Cancer Epidemiology at UW and MHS in Cancer Epidemiology at JHU.I love both of the programs and I have troubles ranking them. I am an international student and I intend to apply for a PhD program after master's graduation. Could you please offer me some suggestion and help me to make a choice?

JHU is more prestigous in Public Health in my country and it always ranks NO.1 on USnews. I am also fascinated by its research reputation. However, to my knowledge, Baltimore is not safe, and especially dangerous at JHU's medical campus.

UW is located in a better city and there may have more opportunities in Seattle. Besides, UW's faculty in Cancer Epidemiology is larger than that of JHU.

MS or MHS, which is better for the future PhD application?

The better city or the better school, which one should I choose?

Thanks for any advice!

Baltimore has gotten MUCH better over the last few years and there are some very nice, cute areas where students live not too far from campus. I'm not sure that UW would have more opportunities than JHU, but perhaps in cancer epidemiology. I'm not familiar with that area. JHU's proximity to DC provides a ton of opportunities. I would choose based on what program is better.

Thank you for your advice! In terms of the program, I think JHU is better.

I cannot comment on program strength.... but:
I have lived just outside of Baltimore and Seattle. I can tell you that around campus, Baltimore is perfectly safe. The city has some rough parts (don't all cities?), but students and locals alike say the area around the med school and SPH is fine.
Baltimore is also wildly cheaper to live in than Seattle. Seattle housing prices are rising faster than anywhere else in the country, too, so it getting even more expensive.
As for opportunities in the area...Both Seattle and Baltimore have a ton of public health and medical organizations. While you might think Baltimore is close to DC, it is not close enough for you to regularly get down town. Using public transit it takes 1.5-2.5 hours to get into the heart of DC. Driving, it would take about an hour if there was no traffic, but the traffic is usually terrible so you might be in thr car for 2-3 hours.
Finally, I am under the impression that JHU does a better job of finding funding for their PhD students, so keep that in mind.
Best of luck!
Wow, thanks a lot! I think JHU is more competitive in public health and I prefer the city with lower living expanses. If safety is not a problem, the choice may be easier for me. Thank you!
