Hi!
I know this is a very old thread, but I just stumbled across this as I was filling out this experience on my AMCAS. I'm not sure if you are still in high school/college and are interested in this, but maybe this could help other people in the future. I did this program the summer after my senior year of high school. I'm from Washington, so I don't know anything about the housing situation unfortunately. I think the other students in the program with me who were from out-of-state mostly had friends or family that they stayed with but if I remember correctly one of them stayed in UW housing.
I cannot recommend this program enough. Especially if you are leaning towards the younger side. While this may not be the best for doing ground-breaking research in 8 weeks, this has opened so many doors for me afterwards. It was one of my first legit research experiences and they have a Faculty Lunch Lecture every Friday in which you can meet people doing cool research who are at the top of their fields. Network your ass off for the ones you like. I personally want to go into Neurosurgery and through the shadowing provided, I ended up clicking really well with one of the chiefs and he has been my mentor pretty much the past 3 years. This landed me an opportunity to help co-author a manuscript published in Journal of Neurosurgery as a rising sophomore. My mentor in the program (the PI of the lab I worked with) has instilled with me really valuable lessons in research that I still think about today. I also catch up with him from time to time. They love their students and they want us to succeed. The program coordinators Jim and Christina are wonderful as well. You also get to sit in on Grand Rounds every week, and while most of it will probably go over your head like it did mine at the time, it's incredible exposure and outlet for learning. The presentation you give at the very end is really cool because you get to do it in front of all the participating faculty of the UW Neuroscience/Neurosurgery (nervewracking too).
You get out of this program, as with anything else, as much as you put in. If you or anyone who is reading this post wants to learn more, feel free to message me and I'd be more than happy to go into more detail/chat about this! Being so young when I did this program, I feel like they raised me in those 8 short weeks and I'm endlessly thankful.
