Dear Friends,

I have one question please, I have read about the UW surgical subinternships for FMGs who are interested in getting into surgical residency in US. My question is, do you think it is a good thing to spend money and time on, or just apply for residency, even if you get prelim.spot, I think one year of CS is better than 2 months of CS.

Thanks

Which UW? Washington or Wisconsin?

I guess it depends on how strong are your clinical letters and/or if you have ever rotated in the U.S.

I decided to apply given that my letters are not up to date and I have spent a considerable amount of time in research.

The only thing that worries me is how competitive it is....I guess it isn't as popular as I thought. Nevertheless, the UW sub-internship is the only one available for IMGs nowadays.

Hope that helps,

Sez who?

They may be the only program that advertises such a program and charges for it, but there are programs across the country that will accept IMGs for sub-Is.

To my knowledge (and correct me if I'm wrong), medical students from foreign medical schools can do sub-Is. However, those who have already earned the MD title are ONLY eligible for observerships.

For instance, I tried to pursue ~10 programs to take me in for a "hands-on" rotation (even offered to pay my own malpractice insurance) since I've heard that other people was able to set this up. Unfortunately, most hospital policies wouldn't allow them to accept me, therefore I was offered an observership instead.

Of course, there are other options (http://www.americlerkships.org/) but their tuition fees are even higher than U. Wash. Moreover, their "hands-on" rotation are mainly assigned to private practitioners.

If you know of ANY department that has taken International MDs for a sub-I, I'm the first one in your list who will be willing to go =)

That is correct - you did not clarify that you were speaking about graduated physicians.

That is commonplace - the medical liability is too high to allow graduated physicians, who would be expected to perform up to the standards of a physician rather than a student, to have clinical hands-on experiences.
