Hello, I am currently studying for the Step 2 CK and will not have time to complete all of Uworld. People have told me that most of the questions that claimed they were high yield (noted at the bottom of the question with ****EXTREMELY HIGH YIELD!) were almost all on their exams. Does anyone have a list of the high yield question IDs that I could create tests with? It would be extremely helpful and very appreciated. Thanks!

Based on your avatar, I assume you want your cake and eat it too. I have the 2CK on December 29th. I'd love for the UWorld fairies to come deliver the HY QIDs to my door.

(that's not meant to be disdaining, but 2 weeks out from my exam you can cut my fomentations some slack)

Not yet. I'll probably do my first NBME like a week out. Now that I'm almost through UWorld 2CK and realize how it's basically just a program for teaching students to over-think, I have no intention of starting the real (i.e., NBME) questions until I'm through with it.

USMLE Rx. I started doing Kaplan QBank for 2CK but it was garbage. Basically every question I got wrong was a "trick" type situation or minor detail that would never show up in a million years on the Step 2. I did about 2-300 questions of Kaplan before jettisoning it and just starting UWorld, which is much better. I had done Rx first, which was OK (not as good as for Step 1), but still a good starting point before UWorld.

Phloston,
what if we started off with Uworld. Would it still be beneficial to then transition to usmlerx? Or is it a bad idea to go to a lower quality qbank?

What about doing kaplan questions on high yield mode? wouldn't it be worth it then?

thanks

My core philosophy behind USMLE prep has always been do as many questions as you can. But I've had to come to terms with the fact that 2CK prep is very different from Step 1 prep. Kaplan I wouldn't recommend at all for 2CK. As I said, I did 2-300 questions before realizing it was a minutiae-joke once again. Ditching Kaplan for me was like finally blocking the psycho ex and feeling good about it. There was some question I encountered on SIADH, where it's exceedingly HY to know it's a euvolemic hyponatremia, but Kaplan had the answer as hypervolemic because they were talking about intravascular volume apparently. Either way, I was like, "Wtf would you ever write a question like that? Never in a million years would SIADH show up as anything other than euvolemia on the real deal." After I hit that question I ditched the QBank.

Uworld is good for 2CK, but quite a few of the questions (similar, but not remotely as bad as Kaplan) are tricks/train people to over-think, which I actually think is a big no-no. For example there's a question where the entire vignette is about a young vegan guy who has clear signs/Sx of B12 deficiency, and then the answer is pernicious anemia, not decreased B12 intake, because they say despite the veganism, pernicious anemia is more common. Then they went on to specify a technicality about the length of time he was a vegan and how that wouldn't have been long enough for B12 deficiency. Regardless, I've written several feedback comments to UWorld questions along the lines of "why are you training people to over-think? The NBMEs would never trick a student like that." That was probably the worst question I've encountered in UWorld so far.

But anyway, to answer your question, USMLE Rx I found to be solid for Step 1 but just OK for 2CK. I would not recommend going to USMLE Rx after UWorld. Rx isn't nearly as updated. I would recommend to any of my future Step 2 students to do Rx then UWorld if they are far from the exam. But if they are within the final few months, just do UWorld thoroughly and well and reference UpToDate.

Oh yeah I remember that Vegan question and I think I got it wrong the first time because I picked dietary B12 def. I hope on the real thing that they won't do stupid things like that. I have actually been using FA for CK and I've found it to be pretty good. Even Step-Up To Medicine has been good to re-enforce some of the technical stuff. I've finished USMLERX and Uworld (I actually did Uworld first, made my notes, and then went to RX..found RX to be both easier and simulatenously more challenging), and now I'm in my final review phase. I was thinking of getting a subscription to UpToDate, do you think its worth it now? Or I am too late.

I have no experience with kaplan for either step 1 or 2ck, so I can't really speak to that. Regarding the UW example you posted, that is clearly a ridiculous question. However, despite this, I don't think you can avoid UW--it is still by far the best question prep out there. So, your best bet is to simply be cognizant of when something stupid like that pops up and ignore it. I did USMLE Rx sort of after UW, but I agree it should be done before if possible.

Was there something else specific you wanted me to comment on?

Would you recommend doing RX after Uworld? Since you've already done this route? Did it help improve your score, despite starting off with Uworld?

Honestly, I didn't use RX as a resource to study from. I just did as another source of questions. I really didn't make any notes from it either. That qbank basically forces you to know every single word and point that's in FA (obviously, because its made by FirstAid). Uworld is going to be key here, really. I would say doing RX before Uworld is easier though, because you've already done the gold standard Qbank. There were still times where I'd get stumped by RX though. Not every question was easy and some were just poorly worded or controversial.

How do you guys remember all this stuff to get high scores? I feel like I'm constantly forgetting all the details...and there are so many small ones to remember!!!!
