VA Fee Basis Position

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone here ever taken a fee basis position with the VA? Are you able to detail what this looks like? Thank you.
Have only heard of this in sought after specialties like urology

"Fee basis" is also how they pay community rad oncs and other specialists who take care of VA pts outside of their system

You mean productivity based at the VA? Sounds like you'd be the lowest paid member of the department.
I am meeting with them Friday but I am not sure what it means. It's "part time" not full, which is what I'm looking for, but it's unclear how it's compensated

I trained at one of the VAs in your area.

My understanding of fee basis is when they send patients out to you for treatment when they are full for some reason (equipment, doc availability, etc). I know no details of the renumeration.

Note that their schedules are fairly light, and fee basing patients out for lack of capacity could at times be laughable to a busy private doc.

Perhaps there is another meaning for fee basis that I'm not aware of.

They also send patients out when they live more than X miles from the VA with a radiation facility

We take VA patients via fee basis. The reimbursement is good once the fee basis request is approved.

VA staffing is heterogeneous. In some instances, you work directly for the VA system; other times, the VA and academic practice, or your academic practice will staff VA. Of those options, the most beneficial is to work directly for the VA. The pay is not always strong, but the benefits package can be quite good if you navigate the system correctly. The VA will hire part-time. However, absolutely everything will be prorated to the level of your time. This may or may not be worth your while.
