So how's this for Irony - on my way to a job interview for a position at the VA Hospital, I get a speeding ticket. Turns out a speeding ticket in Virginia, if you are going 80mph+, is considered a (class 1) misdemeanor - on par with theft, burglary, DUI/DWI, assault, etc.

So this Wed. I was convicted of my speeding violation (was honest with the judge about speeding, hoping my honesty and clean record would help reduce the charge). So now I have a criminal record 🙁

Anyways, I got the job (yay). Took them two weeks to send out the background/credential stuff - first question: have you ever been convicted of any criminal charges (including felonies, misdemeanors etc.)

I lawyered up and will be returning to court this Wed. for an appeal; seems that everyone with a lawyer managed a reduced sentence. So I may yet still get it removed.

BUT - would this interfere with my ability to get hired, or am I just worrying way too much? In any other state, this would have been just a regular traffic ticket.

You should be ok. Just don't try to hide the fact that you are a criminal 🙂

Getting it removed is the best option as you will have to address this forever on every application for privileges, licensure, insurance panel etc...

That is a tough break, but I doubt you would be the only employee/new hire in the entire facility to get dinged with such a bogus charge. If that is the state law, then I'd guess that VA wouldn't put too much stock in something like that. Now, your assault with a deadly weapon charge is a whole 'nother story... 😉
