I'm currently a medical student looking into Psychiatry. Was curious about how much vacation time (typically) Psychiatrists are given? Say in a hospital based job or a community center type job. Are they given 4-weeks paid vacation? 6-weeks? 8-weeks?

Obviously it varies, but what is the 'normal' range? I looked at some Psychiatrist job listings and the 4-5 I looked at didn't mention anything about vacation time.

Reason I ask is because during practice I would like to travel overseas for maybe a 4-5 weeks at a time once a year. And given the 'long-term' relationships Psychiatrists develop with their patients, is that idea (4-5 week vacation) compatible with the job of being a Psychiatrist?

Residencies generally offer anything from 4-6 weeks of vacation per year. How they allow it to be divided up (either by weeks, days or in one block) or if they let you choose the times you actually want is up to the program.

When you're in practice, you can do whatever you like as long as your patients are covered.
