i'm currently a graduate intern for a chain. i plan on taking my boards next month and will then float for them for awhile. i want to plan a vacation in may (havent taken one in years not even to celebrate graduation). if i ask them now for a week off would they be mad? can floaters take off whenever they want? in this bad economy would this be something i can lose my job over?

Dont see why they would be mad as long as it is not a paid vacation.

Contact your district manager about this because this is a company by company decision.

I wouldn't dare asking for vacation. It could get you in serious trouble since your still new. Now that pharmacists are in supply they could easily replace you with someone that is willing to work more.

You speak top your superiors. If taking a week off is going to get you in trouble. you don't want to work there.

You coordinate the vacation with needs of your employer....

Killingbill:
You should have some time off while you wait for your board results anyway, I don't think there should be any problem, it's just the matter of picking your first day working as a pharmacist. About working as a floater, it depends if you work as a real PRN pharmacist or chain. From my experience with chain, I had to average 80 hours every 2 weeks (I didn't get a sign-on bonus or anything, I just accepted a job offer for a full-time job) So, no, I couldn't and still can't take off whenever I want. If you know somewhere that lets you do that, please, please tell me! BUT, floaters are first in line for vacation where I work, meaning they get to have what they requested before any staff=non-floater pharmacists. We turn in our vacation request every year, so ask your supervisor/scheduler. I hope this help & Good Luck with everything :luck:
