What the relationship between protein vs. polysaccharide and class switching or eliciting an immune response?
Is it always protein > polysaccharide in terms of eliciting an immune response and class switching? Then how do we fight off Strep. pneumoniae infections?

Today, I encountered the following question

Which of the following immunization in a healthy 1 month old will only develop IgM and not IgG

a)Bacterial polysaccharide
b)Live attenuated Measles vaccine
c)Poliovirus vaccine
d)Tetanus toxoid
e)Unconjugated Heptan

I would say its bacterial polysaccharide. Thats why vaccination for organisms with polysaccharide capsules (S.pneumo, H.influenzae) are conjugated with a protein component to induce a T-cell response or else only IgM antibodies are produced. As a reference, in FA 2011, this is mentioned on pg. 139 in micro section.

correct me if I'm wrong...

The answer is A. B cells can recognize and generate an IgM response against non-protein components without T-cell activation.

Choices B (part of MMR in childhood vaccination schedule), C and D (part of 5-in-1 vaccine [DTP-IPV-Hib] in childhood vaccination schedule) will eventually generate an IgG response as B-cells undergo class switching.

Choice E is not immunogenic itself.

Hope this helps.
