Hi there,

I'm just starting my Rad Onc residency training here in Canada, and I was wondering if anyone had an idea about what the value of a Canadian certification has in the States.

My sense is that the reputation of Canadian residencies (like Canadian med schools) may not be as good as some of the best centres in the U.S., but that they would still be well-respected because (1) all programs here are accredited by the same set of standards, and (2) because those standards are generally very high. On the other hand, we generally don't have the same access to cutting-edge technology that residents in the U.S. might.

They have forecast an apparent shortage of positions in Canada by the time I graduate, and so your replies may have very real implications for not only my fellowship, but also my career.

Thanks!

there's no big issue; Princess margaret is one of the best in the world. Your visa status and ability to persuade employers that you want to work in the statesa re your big hurdles.

From what I understand, many Canadian residents apply for US jobs. In the past this required taking the American written and oral boards prior to the start of the job. Since the timing of the boards have changed, I am not sure how this would be affected. Treatment approaches are often different between the US and Canada, so a major hurdle is learning these differences.

good luck
