I am US citizen in an International Medical school (Caribbean medical student). I have heard some talk of Unfunded Residencies. I thought about unfunded and I am still thinking about it. However, do you think anyone will be appreciated if you are working your butt off for free. However, I would like to know if there is a list of unfunded programs now or in 2 yrs? What is a volunteer residency? Can a person later get funded in that residency?

Realistically this is a dead end. If you can't match/scramble/prematch into a funded position, you won't be getting a residency.

Thanks Law2Doc. I am 2 years away from match, so I have to start planning now to do everything I can to match.

My understanding of these positions is that they basically exist for FMGs who plan on practicing back in their home country. You don't receive any sort of accreditation in the states but can market yourself in another country as being American trained.

If you plan on practicing in the US than these positions are a dead end option.
