Just curious...the first vanderbilt secondary question has a 2,000 word limit! Is anyone actually writing that much?? 😕

I don't know. I am thinking about it, I suppose one could write tons of stuff for an autobiography, but how much can one pour in to make 2000 words!! That's like 3 pages or something!

So much to do, so little time...🙂🙂

Hi guys, do you think you could fill me in on the details? My folks just called me to tell my I got the interview and they are mailing it up to me. So, I won't get it until Mon or Tues.

Congrats Vandies. This is exciting!

How do you guys think Vandy screens? Are they pretty selective in giving out interviews? I'm just trying to see how excited I should be that I got an interview....Thanks!

this vandy essay is driving me nuts. and i haven't even gotten to the other two. 🙁 man, if they invite you for an interview, how much do you think the secondary really means? i still have to send out other secondaries and i'm so behind! ah well...

I just got my Vandy snailmail so Im in the same boat as you. I think the secondary is probably pretty important because they are more likely to draw interview questions from your secondary than your primary (I hear many schools with extensive secondaries are like this).

So yeah, Im assuming its pretty important for creating a base from which the interviewer will work off of. Im sure the writers block will pass soon for ya. Good luck!

Where'd these numbers come from? I'd like to see them for some of the other schools I'm applying to.

Thanks!

Koma..thanks for the numbers. Just curious, where did you get them from? Is there a link or something? I'd like to check for my other schools as well. Thanks!

Those numbers come from the online edition of US News and World Report (you have to buy the online access)

ahhh! i just got an interview there too. i am completely shocked 🙂 and happy. 1 in 3 chance ain't bad... anyone schedule their interview yet?

Out of curiosity, what are the essay prompts on the Vandy secondary?

Thanks,

Here are Vandy's secondary questions for MD applicants:

1. Write a brief autobiography. As completely and precisely as possible, give a picture of yourself, your family, and events you consider important in you. In doing so, identify the values that are of greatest importance to you. If you have completed your undergraduate education, please comment on what you have done or have been doing since graduation. You may either upload a file from your computer or type your statement in the space provided. (2000 words).

2. In addition to preparing you to be an excellent physician, Vanderbilt is committed to educating leaders and scholars in clinical practice, basic research, clinical research, education, and health policy. Describe any skills or experiences that have prepared you for one or more of these broader missions. You may either upload a file from your computer or type your statement in the space provided. (500 words).

There was another one, but it was about your research, and I think this was just for MSTP applicants, although I could be wrong, and if so, somebody please correct me (cause I wouldn't want to turn in an incomplete essay! 🙂🙂).

Hope this helps!

okay....

so when ppl are writing their autobiographies, do you think it's a good idea to sort of re-mention the extracurriculars on amcas? i.e. volunteering, research, etc. after all...these were an important part of my life, but i feel silly just sort of rehashing them over again.

any thoughts?

SPUMONI - i didnt go into depth again about my research or clinical work, but i did mention them.

Yea I'm mentioning mine, and perhaps highlighting one or two experiences that I had with them that I couldn't really touch upon in the AMCAS. I feel like doing that will sort of corroborate the amount of time i spent in those particular activities that I listed on my primary...and it's not like I won't have enough space to do that (2000 words...haha) 🙂

i was a regular applicant last year and wrote all three essays (includingi the one about a prospective research project). if u guys are applying to ucsd, u might consider using that autobio to save time.

YOGI BEAR - how are the interviews at Vandy? Did you get in? If you don't mind, what were your stats (just trying to gauge my chances). btw, if you did get in, but didnt go, what was it that kept you from accepting? Thanks!

hey,

yup...i got in after being waitlisted. my interview at vandy was pretty laid back. i think i had one w/ a cardiologist. the admissions staff will take you directly to your interviewer. u have a pretty standard tour w/ the students. if u're flying into nashville at night and need a cab cuz shuttle's not around or your host can't pick u up, it'll run about $35. once u're done w/ interview, u can catch the shuttle back to the airport. i forgot what it was...but probably under $20. my interview there was standard questions...pretty laid back. my interview probably talked 40% of the time. many of the lecture classes were held in one building so it's possible to sit in on the first and second year classes. in terms of stats, all i'll say that i'm slightly below last year's usnews 3.78 gpa/11.2 mcat. however, i did get double-digits in all three sections on the mcat. if u're within like a 3.5/30, i think it's definitely worth applyin. i thought i had a good interview. i also wrote A LOT on the secondary, particularly the autobio. i think the essays really helped me out, especially since i've done a lot hospital volunteering (couple hundred hours)/several summers/semesters of research and incorporated those features into my autobio and potential research project (regular M.D.).

if i remember correctly from aamc's website regarding minority data, it comes out that one of vandy's classes a few years ago was composed of 60% guys/40% girls amd among those, about 70% caucasian, 25% asian, and 5% all others.
