Hey guys, I am new to the OB world, I was wondering how does Vanderbilt rank and how would you guys describe the OB program there compared to other places. thanks

I have spoken to a few people who have rotated at Vanderbilt. One person did not match well with the resident he was assigned and it reflected upon his evaluation. His main concern was that it was very hierarchal (sp?) in that PGY1s were limited to vaginal deliveries, PGY2s did the c-sections, etc... He also thought it was very female with only 1-2 men in the whole program. The other person I spoke with just felt like she did not fit well. I do know that they have some of the most highly esteem faculty in all obstetrics and gynecology. They even do some in-utero surgery for correction of birth defects, which is something that very few people do.

Again, none of this info is first hand. I do know the program coordinator, Debbie Scraggins, is very nice as I am contemplating setting up a rotation at Vandy. In the end, investigate it as much as possble and try and decide if it is a place you would be happy at for 4+ years. Perhaps others who have first hand experience could comment.

Vanderbilt is a excellent residency that will only get better over the next several years. The senior residents have all been able to accomplish their professional goals (3 private practice, 2 academic practice, 1 fellowship). You get to train with some of the more approachable and better known OB/GYN's in the country who have edited and written the major texts in the specialty. Dr. Gabbe (Gabbe's obstetrics) helps you learn diabetes in diabetic clinic, Dr. Jones (Telinde's gynecology) teaches in gyn oncology, Dr. Zimmerman (chapters in Telindes and past president of Society of Pelvic and Recontructive Surgery) teaches vaginal surgery. These are just of the few people who you will work with in a new financially stable hospital.
There aren't any fellows at Vanderbilt which means you are the first assist for radical hysterectomies, complex pelvic cases, and high risk OB cases.
The new chair is Dr. Nancy Chescheir from UNC and she has been universally lauded for her positive impact on the program.
Vanderbilt should be on everyone's list of places to interview if possible. The hospital is up to date and new, Nashville is a great city, and the opportunity to be a balanced OB/GYN with options for private practice or fellowship are there. Good luck.

Being from Vandy, I can give u the inside. Vandy OBGYNs are not happy people. When I rotated through there I heard the residents say that things are kind of wierd in terms of hierachy as well. It is not a pleasent environment. Also, they had empty slots last year for OB. This is because people are not happy there and the word is getting out. I know that the dept is worried about this and they are trying to change this. but I dont think these things change over night.... good luck.
