I was noticing from some of the match lists posted that very few people ranked Vandy, or if it was ranked, it was pretty low. I was wondering if anyone who interviewed there could tell me a little about the program. If you are more comfortable sending me a PM, that's fine too. I'm just curious about this program because, for logistical reasons, it may be one of the only ones I can look at in the future. Thanks!

Did not rank Vandy because I thought they were weak in surgical numbers, got a disorganized feeling from the entire program (they did not present themselves well at all), far from family, and really hated Nashville. People were extremely rude and I come from Miami for Christ's sake! 😱

wow. my fiance had a completely different impression. She did a month there and was fairly impressed with the program. My understanding is they have a new Chair from UNC (that everyone seems to love) and a new program director. This is second hand but i believe she said their numbers were similar to Wake Forest, which apparently has pretty good numbers.

we ranked them highly.

I too sense the negative impression by many with regard to Vandy's program. I on the other hand though quite favorably of it and ranked it high. I believe Dr. Chescheir (new Chairman) and Dr. New (new PD) will revive the program to a "top 10" status in a few years. It sounds like many changes have taken place over the last year and many changes for resident benefit will continue to take place. It sounds like the previous PD was unwilling to address resident needs and the program turned into a heavy service oriented program instead of emphasizing resident education with the service component. I personally know a PGY2 who has been extrememly happy with the education and the opportunities. He states they are a very busy with good pathology and little "malignant teaching".

Just some of the high points I liked:
1) Excellent faculty (#1 gyn-onc in US? in Dr. Howard Jones, Gabbe, author? of the authority textbook in OB-US
2) Likely addition of at least MFM fellowship within 1-2 years
3) Change occurring for the better with heavy emphasis on resident education
4) Best & most efficient computer system of any of the 12 programs I seriously considered

Good luck to everyone with the match.
