I'm currently debating on which one to send an LOI to. waitlisted for vcom-auburn and NYITCOM. FL resident for reference! currently open to specialities but interested in surgery, ER med, anesthesiology

NYITCOM
cons
- much further away from home
- wayyyy more money, including schooling, COL, etc it would be a crazy about of debt
- larger student class

pros
- seems like research is pretty easy to come by
- opportunity for health policy work
- asynchronous classes (mixed feelings, why spend sm money to do classes online?)
- more opportunity to do clinical rotations in hospitals with residency programs
- seems to have a slightly better match list regarding specialties

vcom auburn
cons
- rural area means hospitals are further and i would most likely have to move for rotations
- research is available, and i would get my degree with a research distinction but still worried about pubs (if anyone can talk abt this that would be amazing)
- very test heavy schedule
- mandatory lectures, with absence policy
- GPA

pros
- way cheaper, would be able to get an apt on my own
- i do enjoy their mission a lot, definitely passionate about those in the appalachians
- visited campus for interview day and faculty seemed to very supportive and hands on
- smaller class than NYITCOM

Why asynchronous? It allows u to skip the time wasting lectures and watch 2x speed, which allows you to study for other stuff better. I would pick NYIT, it’s a great DO school with good matches and a great reputation. Sure it’ll be a little more costly, but in the end you walk out with debt. It sounds like you would have to “waste” a lot of time at VCom either commuting or sitting in class. If being far away is a big deal consider VCOM but I would stick to nyitcom

Debt is very much a factor, reducing it down the "in the end you walk out with debt" is foolish.

Async classes are much better, class is generally a waste of time.

I would choose VCOM d/t the location & cost. I don't see a whole lot of benefit going to NYITCOM, especially not 2x tuition benefit (put another way, NYITCOM is not 2x better than VCOM auburn).

Oh wow I guess I spoke without knowing the cost of VCOM. If it’s THAT much cheaper, that is insane.

plus going from a place with a lower COL to a much higher one is just tough in general. I love NYITCOM and had a really great interview experience, my biggest struggle is justifying the debt.

you are waitlisted at both. You will take whichever moves you off. If both move you off then I’d go with the cheaper option if it’s that much of a difference knowing that NYITCOM is the better option quality wise from more established, not a branch campus, better rotations, etc. but as said above it is not 2x the quality. I had a coresident go to VCOM-A and they enjoyed it. Student debt is a very real thing. It’s ridiculous how much it is and you don’t think about it until you start paying it off and pay attention to how much interest alone you accrue each month that you have to overcome just to pay down the principal.
