Does anybody know how intense the curriculum at VCOM is? The first block seems to be the toughest to me...

hey guys, I am also curious about VCOM's curriculum. Not to hijack your thread, but I had heard that a few years ago there was some tension between the faculty and students dealing with cirriculum changes...have these issues been ironed out? Things smooth now??

on the interview day, the tour guide who was a second year, said that first block was very intense. the block's following seemed less so.

Speaking as a first year... so take it as we have completed 2 blocks so far.

The curriculum is medical school, so for sure it is going to be intense. However, in my personal experience the first block was easier than the second block. This was not the case for everyone, but again this was my personal experience. A few years ago, I believe they were trying to change the curriculum around, but we haven’t had any changes to ours so far. I can’t tell you how hard VCOM is compared to other schools, but I can tell you I think they teach you well. Some people say it’s no big deal and med school isn’t that hard. Pffft whatever, it’s a lot of studying.

I'm a 2nd year with 3 weeks left of new didactics (last block for us is a board review block).

Overall, most students felt Block 1 was most intense, because it is your first block of medical school. As someone who has gone through all the blocks and done well, I would argue that the conceptual difficulty increases (renal is harder than, say, gi physiology) but it is such a progression that is seems less intense.

The biggest issue is adjustment - to the schedule, to the tests, to the volume. If you stick with it, you will be fine. I think that is true of any medical school curriculum.

If anyone wants specifics on blocks or classes, feel free to ask, but I can only answer as my class experienced it. Classes that come after me will be on a different schedule.

Does anyone know when the actual calendar comes out? I know we have the rough estimate of start and end for our 4 years (2011 - 2015), but when does the actual block calendar come out. I'm trying to attend my niece's wedding late October... in VEGAS... 😉

Any current VCOM students out there? I have a question for you

My question is about the curriculum. I know the first 2 years are broken up into blocks. Is there a connection to previously covered blocks so that you don’t forget the material in the 1st blocks?

Not specifically. A teacher may reference something here and there, but no there is no formal MSK review for instance, which is block 2.

So yes you do have to review all that on your own around board exam time, but that is the case for every medical school right. One thing to keep in mind too is anatomy is taught up until about this time of year, 2nd year. So that may help keep at least those things fresh.

Most schools don't get path until 2nd year. Because you start with Pathology right away at VCOM, it allows you to start reviewing it early and really drill it into your head slowly over time, if you so choose to put in that extra work.
