My apologizes for posting this late since some applicants have already IVed at VCU. But hope it helps rest.

Roughly 4- 5 batches are called for 1o seats at VCU(60-70 candidates:10 seats). One batch (10-12 people) in every mo starting from April (If I am correct).

Day one:
A)First half of morning--
1.Intro with director followed by 2 IVs with 2 different people (30 mins each)-- Expect Qs related to your resume and about you and why you should be selected.
2.Lots of presentations (Very boring and you will sleep through most of them), a Mcq -case based written exam --There would be a case based scenario " 63 yr old male having medical H/o of blah blah blah, dental h/o blah blah, Xrays (poor quality) and perio chart will be provided. On the same line of NBDE part 2, day 2 format. Some 20-25 mcq based Qs will be asked. I dont know from where to study for them ,since I solved it on basis of my part 2 knowledge and it was enough.

Lunch and school tour (I hate that they speed you through the lunch to start the school tour, make sure you finish your lunch first , since you paid for it)

B)Dent sim lab exercise-- If you want to know what is "Dentsim"-- google is your friend. They ask you for 2 exercises -one molar amalgam class I and one molar class II. They would give 2 molars for practice followed by another 2 molars for exam. This is a computer based simulation with biz-zillion measurements and angulations (it didnt make any sense to me at all and till date I have no clue what I did on it, If you got your way to work around it, please share here with others). In short there are 2 sensors that corrects you if you dont have your hand piece position or back position right. There is a inbuilt voice that will keep on screaming at you till you correct it (very irritating!!)Finally this torture ends in 2 hours and you get computer scores, about how you performed.

Day 2:
Its a whole day bench exam. The 6 exercises that were asked last year were
1. Class 2 amalgam prep on max premolar(#13)
2. class 2 amalgam prep on max molar(#14)
3. MODL amalgam restoration (#30), Cavity design is already provided.
4. Full gold crown prep on mandibular molar (#19)
5. Prepare temporary crown on #19
6. Class 4 composite restoration on #9 (the 4 cavity designed is already provided)

For Temporary crowns - powder and liquid method is used. The typo doesn't close , so no occlusion is checked.
Class 4 composite-- all the finishing tools are provided.
MODL amalgam restoration can fracture will taking out the matrix band. Make sure you have enough time in hand to redo it.
The key is that you should have time management skills and keep your cool through out the day.

Its a very extensive IV process and the results are declared after the last batch is done interviewing , so keep a track of that.

Best of luck!!!
