I am here in Richmond (from San Diego) recovering from a horrible flu and bladder infection. I hope I'm well enough by midweek for my interview at VCU. I drove by Sanger Hall today but it was closed so I couldn't go and find the room it's supposed to be in.

Anyways, for those who have interviewed there, any advice? What kinds of questions do they tend to ask? Richmond is sooo nice! They actually have trees and green land! Amazing! =) It would be so great to go here....especially since all my family from California moved here.

Also, if I'm not feeling well enough to go on the tour, will that look bad?

Thanks in advance for ANY advice/comments!

I had a really great interviewer, no surprises or anything. VCU was definitely one of my best interview experiences so far. The tour is given by current students (who were really nice), but they stressed a few times that they are in no way involved in admission. The tour was also quite long. So, if you're really sick it won't hurt you to not go on the tour. However, it's a very nice campus (especially the Egyptian building where the 1st years go to class), so if you're up to it I would suggest you try to go.
Btw, it's very easy to find the admissions office once you walk into Sanger, there's even a sign at the security desk in the lobby telling you where to go. So I wouldn't worry about that at all.

just make sure you get to adimissions office at least 15 min early. there is a good chance that your interview will not be at Sanger at all; i.e., upon arrival, you will be given directions to find your interviewer. mine was about 2 blocks away from sanger; it was 5 min b4 scheduled appt time by the time i got there.

the tour was long; ended around 2 pm. try your hardest to go on tour to get total feel of school environment, then pass out afterwards. best of luck to you.

Hey - welcome to Richmond. I am living here right now and getting a Master's degree at MCV/VCU. My whole lab is away at a conference so I am basically free if you need help with anything. You can PM me if you have any questions/need any sort of help. Good luck.

I interviewed there 4 days ago and it was really nice. The questions were so straightforward that my interviewer had the questions typed up and handed them to me before interview. The questions were pretty simple and delt with your hobbies, travel, and clinical experience. Other questions were why you want to be a doctor and the healthcare crisis. Other people had similar question and questions regarding harry potter, cloning and stem cell research.

My interviewer did ask me a couple of cell bio question like what does the lysosome do and where do mitochondria come from ( mother, father, both or neither). 😕

Yeah VCU is really slack on interview. The most likely question that you will be ask is "What is your favorite sport team". My interview was a little odd, I was asked about my childhood. 😕 But everything went well. My interview was more formal than most and don't worry about finding the room in Sanger Hall, because your interview will not be held there. My interview was for their early admission program, but I am sure it is the same format as the normal track MD program. Good luck to you man.

Thanks everyone for the great advice and heads up! Richmond is so pretty...and the weather here yesterday was very comparable to San Diego. It is a bit cold today...for me at least. 🙂

If anyone has anything else to add, please do so. Thanks!

By the way, I got an unofficial tour of the VCU undergrad campus as well as some of the medical school because my cousin is a VCU alumni and I love how all the buildings look so historical! Absolutely beautiful! So I figure if I didn't go on the tour, I could always still find my way around but I'm going to try to make the effort to go. I just don't want to risk getting sick again before I leave for home.
