I finally received an interview offer at VCU. I am definitely eager to attend, as I would love to live in the Appalachian area. Does anyone have any suggestions of places to visit if I have an extra day? I have heard the school is very helpful with students needs etc.. How is the curriculum set up? Are students in class all day? Any opinions on the school? I have read the other two posts and it seems like people either love it or hate it for some reason. Can one attain in-state tuition rates after the first year of must they pay the $36,000 for all four years? Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay when interviewing at VCU?

I don't really consider Richmond to be Appalachian. It's between the coastal plain and the piedmont, and really pretty flat, except for the river valley.

At VCU, MCV, and UVA it is impossible to obtain in state residency once you start off as an out of state student.

I think you have UVA and VCU (MCV) confused. Uva is in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains, Richmond is definitely not. I am from Richmond.

There are several threads on VCU, I liked the thread on "VCU/UVA discussion panel" or something to that effect that was started two days ago. Look around on this page and the second page of the board to find the thread and read it.

It is true, once you get started at UVA and VCU or any institution in va, you cannot get in state residency and start paying instate tuition. In fact, I do not know why any state institution would let you do that around the country--maybe except Colorado Health Sciences.

The key to getting residency is taking a year off. If you take one year off from school and *work* or just do something even part time and remain gainfully employed, you will get residency and when you return to school--will be eligible for in state tuition and preferences thereof.

Yep, this was reiterated many times over during the interview seminars. However, if it is possible to defer for a year, establish a job a pull in around $20K, then they might consider you for instate residency.
