Update on 2009-2010 application season.
Overall it appears the general feel of the recruitment season is that we've seen an increase in quality applications this year. We're anticipating over the course of our interview season to be close to 190-200 interviews by the time we finish in January.

The general pulse that we've felt from applicants is a renewed interest in Family Medicine particularly in the context of health care reform and the development of Patient Centered Medical Homes.

200 applicants? Wow, that sounds like an unbelievable # for family medicine... what have you avg'd over past 5-10 yrs? What % of your applicants are FMGs?

Just from recent memory our recent pattern has been interviewing 140-160 applicants. In terms of FMG/US grad statistics, we're probably no different than other large programs. I think our large class size (14) and location in Southern California are natural fits for some applicants that are working with geographic constraints. Despite that, we feel fortunate that we've consistently recruited and matched with a diverse group of residents that represent more than just the local geographic region.

I know I'm far away from this but how does the Ventura program stack up with other FM residencies? I'm interested in FM and I live in Camarillo(nearby to Ventura) and my dad owns many businesses next to the Ventura hospital so this program would seem ideal to me as I can study and be with family.

ventura is the #1 unopposed family medicine residency in the country....

I'm not an FM person, but based on some of things I've heard and read, maybe the best way to say it is that Ventura is a well regarded west coast program. A good family friend is a pediatrician who teaches the residents and she seems to hold the program in high regard. But like BD got at, how do you define #1 for the entire country out of all the programs out there?

oh damn. I didn't know Ventura was among the top in the country.

Based on what?

It's in the l.a. times...so it must be true...🙂 it's an older article but you will get the idea...

ok, so I can't prove that it is the best. how about "most talked about" full scope family medicine program in the country. these guys do it all. they run the traumas, they run the icu, they do full scope high risk ob, a wide variety of procedures not done at other residencies(like appys), etc etc
other programs like contra costa, natividad, ohsu klamath falls, and UW rural/spokane are certainly good programs as well but it's hard to say "cowboy residency" without someone bringing up ventura county.
a few years ago I was considering returning to medschool to do a "full scope " family medicine residency in hopes of landing a rural family medicine/em/only doc in town kind of gig and the program that was recommended to me time and time again was ventura county.

Indeed, it's 13 years old. 1997 was the high water mark for interest in family medicine, too.

I'm sure Ventura is still a fine program, but if they're like everyone else, things may have changed somewhat in the past 13 years.

Does anyone know if the program is dually accredited? I see that they have an OMM clinic and they accept COMLEX scores, but I don't see anything specifically about accreditation. Sounds like a great program!

Doesn't look like it from the AOA "Opportunities" web site, however, an FM internship would have to be the easiest to get AOA Resolution 42 approval for and you could take the ABOFP boards I'd imagine. So I doubt its lack of dual accreditation would be much of an issue. BTW you from Maine/UNE ("Stella Maris")?

Hi Koreanboi92,

thanks for the interest. I am not sure where in the course of premed you are, but let me at least inform you about an opportunity for a summer internship program that we offer to undergraduate students. here is the old link from 2 years ago that still has relevant information. keep an eye out in Feb/Mar when we will open applications for this coming year 2010.

J-Rad is right. We are not dually accredited. However, we provide an opportunity for those residents that already have an OMM background to further hone their skills in the OMM clinic which is precepted by a dedicated DO FM attending. Since its inception we have had 5 residents involved in the OMM clinic. It's a great clinic because it serves as a referral clinic from our continuity practices where we can send patients that would benefit from OMM.
