Hello everyone, I have been having a really hard time with verbal. I tried many different strategies (EK, TPR, Daves, etc.) and still find myself taking almost 25 min to finish a passage. In those 25 min I still feel a little foggy on the content and the best score I have goten is a 5/7. I was googleing for help in verbal and came across this Verbal Virtuoso book. I looked it up here on SDN and it was practically shunned. I am desperate and I purchased the Verbal Virtuoso book. I am making this thread incase the book really helps, maybe my information can help someone like me in the future. The book is a relatively easy read and I just finished reading the content and I did the first practice test. So far I am finishing every passage with an average time of 15:00 min. The most impressive thing is my comprehension is so much more. Before I would guess I understood and remembered 60-70% of the passage. Now I can say I am at like 90-95%. Also my scores have been the highest they have ever been. In the first practice test I scored a 10. :naughty: I have been no where near that. I found the 1st practice test to be similar to passages in the TPRH VW. I am going to keep updating this threat with my results in the TPRHW. Yesterday I was totally down and felt like verbal was raping me. Today I feel like I have a fighting chance. Lets see....

Just kidding (I think). It'll be interesting to see the results, keep us posted.

I would try this...

I am taking a princeton review class and felt that their verbal advice was useless so I stopped going to class and just did practice by myself. So what's my strategy? Aboslutely nothing. I read the passage and try to comprehend it to the best of my ability. No highlighting or any writing involved. Then I answer the questions while refering back to the passage. Simple stuff.

I am averaging 11 to 12 on EK 101 and AAMC practice tests. Of course, these scores could be better but I always seem to miss at least 4 or 5 questions.

LOL i was expecting someone to say that since the previous people that brought it up were pretty much raped. But all kidding aside I'm just going to post my results. So far I'm just happy I found something that works for me. Today I'm going to try and do the second practice exam and post me findings.

I tried the PR method and I found it useless as well. They suggest previewing the questions before reading the passage. Whenever I did that I forgot what the questions asked instantly while reading the passage. I believe my problem is comprehension. For example When I read the passage It takes me forever to feel like I understand everything and once I attempt the questions I find myself going back to the passage and finding the answer for each question. So I waste time dissecting the passage to eventually waste way more time finding each answer in the text. With verbal virtuoso I feel much more confident in my comprehension and only return to the passage for questions that ask you to go back. For example, How is this word used in the passage, or what does the author mean in the last sentence of paragraph 4 etc.

I am very skeptical of the original poster. I also purchased the above verbal program and I am really not impress. Sure it can infact work for some people. Nonetheless, I really suspect that original post. Can you say, "advertisement" boys and girls? Sure you can...

Hey man its ok if it didn't work for you. It's working for me! I am not advising anyone to purchase anything. I am simply documenting my results so in the end people can decide for themselves. Heck I dont even know if this system is the best or perfect. Simply, I tried the other ones and they were not working for me. I was not sure this would help me at all, but I was desperate. Take your negativity else were. "Aint no body got time fo dat"

Alright guys I just finished practice exam 2. Last night I finished exam 1 without timing myself so today I decided to say screw it and try and do it in 60 min. Previously I found this impossible since it was taking me very long to finish a passage. Ok so the results are: My average time for the passages were 8.5 minutes. My quickest passage was 6:35 minutes and my longest was 10:00 minutes. Based on these results I dont believe I will be doing any more passages separately. My reason is some passages on the MCAT will simply take longer and some will take less time. For now on I will practice doing 7 passages in 60 minutes. Ok my score was 30/40 which using the scale they have is a 10. So yesterday on Practice Test 1 I scored a 10 without timing myself and today I scored a 10 with a total time of 60 minutes. I am glad to say that in the questions I got wrong, the right answer was the other option I had in mind. In these questions I feel I should of spent more time with them, but since I was being timed I followed my gut instinct. This was my first ever timed verbal exam and I was worried about the time. In addition, I am going to try and do Verbal Test 1 from EK 101 passages to see if maybe the practice passages are too easy or something.

Finally, I am really happy I finished my first Verbal timed practice test with a 10. Two days ago I would never thought I would be putting up these results so soon. I hope I keep getting better.
