@Pinner Doc and other New Englanders.

Heading to New England a few times this year now.

July 15-22: Summer vacation at Stowe and Killington with the wife. Gotta get out of this wet hell for a good bit.
Oct 1-5: Bro is getting married in New London, CT.
Early December: Skiing for at least 4 days. I'm committed to 2 ski trips this year.

Anyone wanting to suggest things to me is welcome. Eat this not that. See this not that.

Why is this important to me? Can't take it here in FL anymore, and I'm hoping these trips are RAD and reveal a landing spot for the Fox Family.

Simon Pearce is worth eating at and going to see the glassblowing

Quechee gorge is fun to hike.

Red Hen Baking is good bread

Hen if the wood is a great restaurant

American Flatbread is amazing pizza

Ben and Jerry is fun

If you like to hike, Camel’s Hump is great. So is Mount Mansfield.

Stowe Mountain lodge (nice resort too) has a gondola that goes up Mount Mansfield.

If you want a nice drive, take the road that goes through Mount Mansfield. It narrows to one lane to cross the mountain and is exciting/beautiful.

Burlington church street is great

You can rent bikes to go over the Cause way

If you want to relive some young days while doing something unique, take the booze cruise on Spirit of Ethan Allen. Awesome to dance on the boat, and sit outside to watch the stars while on the lake.

I lived there for 8 years and did medical school there. Awesome place during the Summer/Fall.

Thanks for the data.

Hen of the Wood looks pretty right up my alley. I love mushrooms.
Gonna pass on Ben n Jerry's because I can't stand their political grandstanding. Shut up and make ice cream, you two.
Stayed at Stowe Lodge (Spruce Creek) last winter and it was totally rad. Absolutely taking wife up the gondola to that restaurant at the top.
Booze cruise isn't for us. We're just not into alcohol at all these days and my sleep is all the better for it.

Any data on the river rafting near Stowe? Give my wife an innertube and set her afloat and she's in heaven.
Also planning on hot air balloon ride and fly fishing.
Gonna make the drive to Killington and get some downhill MTB in on one day (I bike and get filthy, she 'spas' and gets clean).
The Mt. Mansfield drive seems really wild; absolutely doing this. Stowe is 'home base of operations'.

Stowe Local here...

Hiking:

The notch road drive (I think what Porfirio was referring to) is definitely a must, a few hiking trails off of this but would recommend sterling pond hike.

The toll road drive up to the top of mount Mansfield is pretty neat too, although if you're into the hiking its definitely worth the work. If you hike, you could also hit up the Cliff House (restaurant toward the top of the mountain) on the way.

Stowe pinnacle is a nice shorter hike with a view

For mountain biking:

Cady hill and/or Adams Camp right in Stowe has a huge network of trails that attaches to Trapps trail network (Ranch Camp has access to the trails and is a neat burrito/bike shop combo place)

Perry hill is a popular spot in Waterbury

I've never been, but Kingdom Trails/East Burke area (less than 1.5hr from Stowe) is supposed to be the mecca of mountain biking in VT (all of New England?)

Stowe bike path is a nice 10mi winding path but can get busy, the Lamoille valley rail trail just north of Stowe is beautiful but flat and not super exciting. Similarly in Burlington the Burlington bike path up to the Colchester Causeway is pretty neat - but again is a flat path along the lake

Food:

Hen of the wood and Harrisons are a good spots

Gallus for Italian

Doc ponds/The bench for burger and good beer options

Idletyme has an awesome outdoor vibe - food and beer isn't bad

Not sure about the river rafting - If she's not into white water, I know a lot of people float (think inner tube with a floating cooler) around richmond - waterbury area on the winooski river, I think there's places on the Lamoille to float to but not sure. You could certainly just roll up and put a tube in (after some research) but I think umiak does guided tours... or at least provides tube/shuttle

If you want to do mountain biking, Von Trapp Family Lodge has a good trail.

You and your wife might like to drink a glass or two of wine, sit outside on a boat in the middle of a beautiful lake, clear night sky and see all the stars and Milky Way galaxy. You don’t have to do the “booze cruise” part.

Yes, Notch Road drive. Awesome driving experience!

Amazing. I worked on the Spirit of Ethan Allen the summer after MS1

As an aside, also an excellent Nordic skiing experience in the winter. Gate to gate, Smuggs to Stowe!

Thanks for the tag. My home base is between Burlington and Stowe (basically on the western front of Mt. Mansfield (back side of Stowe). Agree with above suggestions.

The river in Stowe is more of the type of river you’d see people splashing around in, wading, maybe fishing in spots. Might be a bit too shallow and fast moving for an inner tube, but to set up a chair in and bring a book? Absolutely.

Agree with the above suggestions for the Stowe Pinnacle hike. IMO it’s the hike with the best view for your effort. (You can even park halfway up the trail on a higher lot and skip the more boring lower part of the hike if you feel like it).

The Sterling Pond hike at the top of the Notch Rd (which - to be pedantic - doesn’t divide Mansfield but is the pass between Mansfield and Sterling Mountain/Spruce Peak) is, as mentioned, also popular and fun. You can fish up there. Would caution against swimming - many leeches. You’ll be at the top of Smuggler’s Notch Resort. It’s fun to traipse around the top of those chairlifts and catch some views.

I don’t know Killington well.

As others have mentioned, Quechee is a fun area and it’s a classic place to catch a hot air balloon ride.

You might also consider checking out the Mad River Valley/Waitsfield/Warren areas. The Pitcher Inn is good for a nice meal. Mad River Barn is owned by one of our local ER docs. There’s good fishing on the Mad River. Check out Canteen Creemee company.

For your wife, sounds like she has already done The Spa at Spruce Peak Lodge. Topnotch is another popular one. Balnea Spa in the eastern townships in QC is a great experience as well, if you feel like crossing the border (within an hour drive) and making a day up there.

I second Ben and Jerry's and the road over Smuggler.s Notch.
For future cocktail conversation, I would suggest lunch at the Von Trapp Lodge. (Sound of Music movie Von Trapp family.)

My bad, didn’t see the fly fishing comment. If you want to stay close to Stowe, Little river state park is what you’re looking for (also has mtb trails). There’s the lamoille and winooski rivers north/south of Stowe but they’re fairly shallow and slow moving this part of the state so they get pretty warm by July (bad for trout). Little river is fed by the reservoir so stays cold even in mid summer.

As @Pinner Doc said you can fish sterling pond too if you don’t mind hiking with your gear. They stock it every year with brookies via chairlift.

Yeah! As I recall it was about a 40 fold reduction. I think we got under a quart worth at my house and my neighbor managed to get maybe 2 quarts (he went all in storing and boiling 😆)

It’s neat, and a fun one winter experience with the kids, but I wouldn’t want to do it witho it a small commercial evaporator set up, and trees tubed together, etc.

Ours is pretty low rent. We have a fifty gallon drum on its side with a hole cut out of the top for the pan to sit in, and a smokestack. But it works!

Now, it can be up to 60 times. There are farmers that have a CSA, and we got the inside scoop.

Depends on sugar content of the sap, and that varies. Average is 40. But this past year was a high sugar content season for sure… at least in our backyard

Bro, I love you - but I can think of few things more sad than a casino.
<shrug> grew up in the general area and it was where we went for fancy fun weekends. My parent's don't gamble (I do, but I didn't at that time), they just found it beautiful to walk around, go shopping, see live shows, and get food at. Always found it to be what vegas was advertised as being but never actually was.

This may also belie how difficult it was to find stuff to do on the weekends in that corridor between NYC and Boston once you exhausted whatever your given small to mid size town had to offer if it wasn't "go to nyc" or "go to boston"

You know , I take it back... I forgot all about the shows and shopping thing. I'm too used to seeing shuffling hordes of zombie seniors tap slot machines while their lives end.

You need to go to Vermont and Autumn and see the leaves turn. That doesn't make the family want to move up there, nothing will

I'm here in VT now. Temps in the 70s and 60s. People are saying: "this is a bit more like fall than summer, especially in the evenings."
Agree, this is September weather. But any night I can sleep with a window fan and not the AC box is a blessing in my book.

The difference is subtle. In one state they won’t get vaccines because it may misalign their chakras. In the other they wont get vaccines because they don’t want to be microchipped by the government

Genius answer.
I'm no antivaxxer, but I can't handle the people that would eat amythests for breakfast to cleanse their spirit energy if they could. Absolutely magical thinking.

Am curious how the rest of your trip went, and if there were any highlights. Maybe there are places you found that I should check out…

Trip went overall very well, even if we did get rained out of fishing and the river float activities (it was like in the mid 60s, too - so that would have been a cold day on the water). Instead, we hit up two World Cup watch parties (one at Stowe itself, one at Von Trapp). Did some short hikes, and kicked around "downtown" Stowe for good eats and small shopping. I went downhill mountain biking at Killington (which was a LOT of fun).

Stopped at some hipster coffee shop on the way to Killington and ordered a latte only to have the crystal-and-hemp wearing freakshow behind the counter try to talk me into putting quartz crystals in my coffee cup to "cleanse my spiritual energy" or whatever before I interrupted him and said words to the effect of : "just hand over the coffee or the next sound you hear will be me chambering a round and that will most certainly have a negative impact on YOUR spiritual energy, Phineas or whatever your fake name is."

We took a hot air balloon ride (awesome) and stopped in downtown Burlington for dinner afterwards to observe the freakshow in their natural habitat. Some italian joint downtown where all the college bars are (it was around 9pm on a Friday, so we figured we'd have peak freakshow activity). All sorts of bums everywhere - both students and non-students. College kids these days enjoy wearing strange things on their heads. Swear that one of them had on a hat like that kid from the "Adventure Time" cartoon at age 22. Granted, I did ridiculous things for the sake of doing ridiculous things when I was in undergrad as well - but at least I showered and sometimes even used soap. My wife was aghast at the number of legal weed shops. I disapproved as well, but I was more interested in watching the bum and bum-adjacent economic activity taking place on the corners. People trading half-smoked cigarettes for what appeared to be dirty, shiny rocks the size of broken windshield glass. Hmm. Wonder what that could have been. One guy was really involved in like a four-way trade summit. He was like the Warren Buffet of dirty rocks and crusty people. The Warren Buffet of bums. Warren BUMfet.

My wife raved about the food all over. She even gave props to "Woke Tacos" in downtown Stowe because the flavor profile was clean and balanced instead of the MexiGrease you get around these parts. They had some hot sauces that I was really stoked about, too.

Addendum: I'd love to hear @cyanide12345678 and @Groove 's market-analysis on bum-futures and their outlook on the hipstersector. Calls or Puts on Warren BUMfet?

Sounds like the trip turned out to be pretty eventful 😄 Despite the rain, you still found plenty to do: hiking, mountain biking, a hot-air balloon ride, watch parties, and good food. The stories from the coffee shop and Burlington, especially the Warren BAMFET part, made it even more memorable. Those random moments are often what end up making the best travel stories.
