ECs:

150+ hours hospital volunteering (over 2 year span)
Part time jobs through most of undergrad, but only about 8 hours/week.
No research
No official shadowing
1 or 2 club memberships, no leadership roles.

NC schools only (UNC, ECU, WF)

Tell me what you think.

Thanks

youre stats are below average at UNC and WF, along with your low ECs means you probably wont have much of a chance

ECU your stats are good.

all in all your app is very risky since you have so little depth. and applying to 3 schools is also risky. if you get in congrats... but most likely youre looking at a year off to bolster your app

Strongly concur; you might get interviews, but these will be most likley followed by wait list or rejection.

take the gap gap year and show off your hum, anism and altruism. Plus, you need to show that you understand what a doctor's day is like.

Don't forget CampbellCOM is in your backyard.

So, I'm hearing a "maybe but probably not." What do you think would be the most critical element to improve over the next year?

Your list.

I thought about adding SC schools (USC, USC - G). My stats are on par there, but it would be out of state, so I think my chances there might actually be worse. Although, I do have strong ties. (But, still... OOS tuition)

If you're from a rural NC county then I think you have a good shot at ECU...UNC is going to be tougher because even the majority of IS applicants are going to have pretty impressive all around applications. UNC only takes 160 students of which 28 or 29 will be out of state...so, the question is do you think that your overall app would put you in the top 130 in-state students?

I don't think you have enough experience to back that up. There are some of us in NC who are getting love from Top 10 or 20 schools who would throw those away for a chance at UNC because of it's great reputation and cost...you're going to be competing against some solid applicants.

As I said...I think ECU could work for you if you're from a rural part of the state and Wake could still be in your favor...but it probably would be better to take a gap year because you're already looking at being a re-applicants due to your lack of work/activities.

First of all, I really appreciate the input. Don't get me wrong, I'm aware that UNC is a bit of a long shot, but I think it would be crazy not to apply there being IS. I am from rural NC, but I feel like a lower stat school would place more weight on EC's.

For this cycle all you can really do is increase your chances by expanding your list to include (the many)OOS schools that will be interested in your stats and background (rural). Have you bought the MSAR? Look at TCMC...

I haven't bought the MSAR, but my school has a "MSAR: Getting Started" type book in the library. It doesn't have many statistics in it though. I assume people are talking about the MSAR Online when the say "MSAR." Is that right? Anyway, I wasn't aware that being from a rural area made any difference. That's something I'll definitely look into.

Apply to the Virginia schools...eastern Virginia really cares about rural underserved people.

I only resurrect this thread because I have decided throw a DO school in the mix and see where you think I stand there. So, VCOM (Carolina Campus), what are my chances? Any different from say, ECU?
