So, I went on vacation and left my dog for my roommate to take care of. My little dog was my best friend and I loved her more than anything. My roommate took her out for a walk, dropped the leash, my dog is afraid of the leash, and she ended up running. Nowhere to be found. So now I am on "vacation" and my little best friend is somewhere out there, scared and alone. I am so sad. Any advice would be great. I am worried sick that I will not get her back. I can't stand this. 🙁

I'm so sorry about this. It's really tough to go through. My fiance's cat ran away (was hiding in the engine of his car that he towed to the auto place) and he was devastated. A couple of things you can do from home is to look up shelters on the internet and make a list of the ones near where the dog ran off. Some will even have a place to input your dog's information in case somebody finds her and sees the website. We called the shelters every couple of days and put up posters. There is also a national lost pet website (http://www.lostfoundpets.us/) that you can post your dog's information on.

There is always hope - we found his cat after a month. Don't give up and good luck!

I'm so sorry, rosemma. Hopefully a good samaritan will see her tags and call. I hope your friend is putting up lost dog signs or putting an ad on craigslist.

Oh I am so sorry!!! I can't imagine what you are going through. You should definitely call your animal hospital and let them know - and then check petharbor (if your shelter uses them) and your shelter website/phone while you are away.

I'll be saying many prayers for you! *hugs*

I'm so sorry to hear that 🙁 Was your dog microchipped?

I would call all vets and all shelters, kennels, etc in the area. If you could send them a picture to display that would help too. I would go for a wide radius, as I've heard stories of dogs traveling a lot farther from home that I would have thought.

I've heard quite a few stories of animals being returned to their owners. While it seems grim, and of course worse case scenario is possible, don't give up hope.

I'm so sorry! I couldn't imagine if my dog had run away while i was on vacation 🙁 Aside from calling the animal hospitals and shelters, you should also warn people that she is fearful and should be approached carefully. Is there something specific that she comes to or a toy that she really responds to that you may use while trying to find her? I hope you find her soon!! good luck!!

First of all I am so sorry, this must be so hard on you. Second, I learned of a couple of services (through SDN pages) you can pay to have them call everyone in the neighborhood that is not on the "do not call" registry. I am trying to figure out the names of those services right now though because I don't remember them... Hopefully I will post back soon if I find it! Good luck until then

SO sorry to hear that rosemma. Like everyone else has said, call local shelters, vet clinics, and the police. At least in my area, the police are often the ones called out if a stray dog/cat is found and they will take it to the shelter or vet clinic (depending on exactly where it was found).

If you are going to try putting up posters, make sure you also post them at any local dog parks. Those owners often keep a better look out than other people.

Good luck and I'll say my prayers that you find her safe and sound.

My dog ran away after some deer in December. I was terrified that she would not be found or had been injured somehow. We posted fliers everywhere in the area, notified the local vets and shelters, put fliers in mailboxes (i know not very legal), and put an ad on the lostpets website not to mentioned scoured the area. The next day a person called after getting the flier in her mailbox and called saying she was hiding under her porch. So... basically I am trying to say that you will find her! I remember how stressed I was, but there is hope!!

Good luck!

So sorry to hear your dog is lost! Don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but you can also post something in the lost and found section in the newspaper, at local grocery stores, pet stores, and at any major red lights/stop signs. Atleast she is on a leash...so whoever finds her should know somebody is looking for her. Good luck!!

I am so sorry to hear about your lost dog as this is my worst nightmare. 🙁

My advice would be to go to www.petfinder.com type in your zip code and call every one of the rescue groups/shelters that come up under your zip code or your city. Maybe expand your search. E-mail is even easier and be sure to send them a photo. I run a small rescue and get these from folks from time to time. We don't take in strays (against our license) so I haven't reconnected anyone yet that way. However, I always take the pet’s info and photo to the clinic I work at and hang it up so others can see and clients can see it. It helps get the word out. Also, many rescue/shelter groups have lists of contacts they work with that they can fwd your pets info on to if you ask them nicely. I would be sure to mention you are on vacation, the whole story.

You may also check out Pets911. Also, go to the shelter/pound every day or send someone. Remember these places depending on your area are run by overworked staff and volunteers with varying experiences/backgrounds.
Also, shifts change and sometimes not all information is passed on to the next shift. How you describe your pet to someone may not be what they see in your pet if it is actually there. I would go so far as to make sure you are allowed to see all the dogs, some court case dogs are kept seperate at some facilities. If your dog is timid or has any perceived "fear" issues he/she maybe kept separate at some shelters.

Take a photo for proof of identity and maybe even e-mail the photo to your local animal control officer if their e-mail addresses are publicly available. It really depends on your area. Some shelters are amazing places and some need a lot of improvement.

I sure hope you find each other! Stay positive!

I'm so sorry! 🙁 I can't imagine what you are going through. That is horrible!! I'm praying for the safe return of your best friend!!

Oh no!! I'm so sorry to hear that... 🙁 I hope your doggy was found safe by someone and comes back home to you! Hopefully your friend is noticeable by many people since it's leash must still be attached and will take the intiative to return your buddy home... I'll keep you and your best friend in my thoughts!

oh, that's awful! call your local shelters and vet hospitals, make sure they have her description. Is your dog wearing tags? Even just a rabies tag is often helpful, we have had numerous people call our clinic after finding a dog with only the clinic rabies tag. Rabies tag numbers are recorded in the computer so that your dog can be identified by the number. I hope you find her!

Don't forget the newspaper. Lost/found pet ads are free. Read it every day. I found a dog once and notified the main shelters that I had found him. They didn't bother keeping a record of that and didn't tell the owner when he called. So, the only way the owner found me was by reading the newspaper where I had posted an ad saying I found him.

He was so happy to have him back! I told him if the dog were microchipped, I would have been able to return him the day I found him. I hope he took my advice.

Rosemma, I just want to say how sorry I am. You and your dog are in my thoughts.

Make sure any posters you put up are, if possible, full color. When I thought my dog had run away (long story), I made up a flier in Word, with an up to date picture, and had them print it out in color. I believe it was reasonable at Kinko's ($25) for several of them (possibly around 50). It is worth every penny if it gets your friend back!

Ohhh I can't imagine how you are feeling right now 🙁 I'm so sorry!

My roommate (who was dog-sitting) was leaving the house this morning and my little boston terrier was sitting outside this morning! Her leash and collar were no longer on and she looked a little tattered. I am more than relieved. Thank god! I am so happy and thank you all for your help, support, and concern. You gave me a piece of mind and you are all wonderful people for wanting to help me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Thank God for happy endings when they actually occur.

Oh, I am so glad to hear she is home!! You must be so relieved! YAY!!

Oh, thank goodness!!! Rosemma, I'm so glad to hear that your pup is back! Now, perhaps an entreaty to the roommate to hold very, very tightly to the leash is in order.

And then you should get to the business of enjoying your vacation, miss! I'll bet you need to relax now even more than you did when you first left!

Thats such good news! Definitely no go with what VAgirl said and enjoy the rest of your vacation!

That's great! I think it would be worth getting a PE at the vet's office just to make sure everything's in working order!

THANK GOODNESS!!! I'm so happy for you (and your baby)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whew! Give your little one a big hug for us!
🙂

Oh thank goodness!!! I'm so glad she's back.

that's awesome she came back!!! she definitely knows where her home is 🙂

Yeah! (PS - if she's not microchipped, you might want to get her done right away when you get back - it can really help!)
