Does anyone happen to still have the US News & World Reports that ranked the vet schools? I was just curious and can't seem to find it anywhere. I know we had it but it got tossed (that's what happens to piles on my counter...). Thanks! 🙂

Here's what I found... no guarantee they're the most recent though (I think they are...)

UC Davis 4.7
Cornell 4.6
UPenn 4.1
Colorado State 4.0
NC State 3.8
Michigan State 3.7
A&M 3.7
Ohio State 3.6
Florida 3.3
Wisconsin 3.3

If UC Davis is back on, then it's either really old or REALLY new. Last I heard (2003 or 2004, and they don't rank the vet schools every year), Davis wasn't even on the rankings because its facilities were so old.

That one is really old. I have the new one, ranked in 2007. Don't put too much weight on it, though...this is all they have - they don't even have the criteria listed, like they do for med and law schools.

1. Cornell University (NY) 4.5
2. Colorado State University 4.3
University of California--Davis 4.3
4. University of Pennsylvania 4.1
5. North Carolina State University 3.9
Ohio State University 3.9
Texas A&M University--College Station 3.9
University of Wisconsin--Madison 3.9
9. Michigan State University 3.8
10. University of Minnesota--Twin Cities 3.7
11. University of Florida 3.6

Washington State University 3.0
18. Kansas State University 2.9

awesome. And as cyrille said, the rankings are useless.

Is Iowa State not on there because of their current probationary accreditation status?

yes, at the time of publication they were on probation but I think they're off now.

Oh? Interesting. I'll have to ask about it in a few weekends when I'm there. If they are, that's exciting. 🙂 Not that I doubted they'd get their ducks in a row, but still.

Interesting about the nebraska students who will do their first 2 years at UNL

Thank you, all, for the information. I had no idea Iowa was on "probation". I was just curious about rankings because I couldn't find anything anywhere.

Apparently the correct term was "limited" accreditation. I seem to have gotten my terminology wrong earlier. 😉

This is one thing I have reservations about with Iowa. By 3rd and 4th year, there will be 145 students in Ames (120 who started in Ames and 25 who will start at UNL). That is alot of students to fit into the clinics etc... They say it won't be a problem, but it seems like things will be tight. The only saving grace is that this year (c/o 2011) is the first year for the UNL program, so maybe they will work out the kinks by time c/o 2012 gets to that point (probably wishful thinking though).

In their defense, they will have the new LA hospital open by the fall and they are aggressively adding new faculty.

How about Oregon and Mississippi?

Here's the rest of the rankings:

24. Mississippi State University 2.1
25. Oregon State University 1.8
26. Tuskegee University (AL) 1.7
27. Iowa State University 0.0
Western University of the Health Sciences (CA) 0.0

Now that I look at this again, I don't think Iowa state failing accreditation is what is causing these changes. I think something else big happened more recently, like Ohio was warned by the AVMA that they were in danger of failing. Can anyone confirm this?

What makes you think it might have been OSU's warning rather than ISU's failing that is causing changes? Just curious.

I don't think that is true at all. Where did you hear that?

Also, yes, Ohio has fantastic research programs in place in the undergrad, graduate and professional schools. The vet schools does a lot of collaboration and work with the medical schools, including extensive work with the James Cancer Hospital. OSU is ranked #8 of all public universities in regards to research overall, and the fact that we are on the largest campus in the country facilitates constant access to resources. Also, one of our first year teachers was just named as an AAAS fellow as a result of her research on retroviruses.

We were told that the two big factors that help rank us really low on the list is lack of diversity within the class and a fairly small amount of money given back to the school by alumni compared with other vet schools. Diversity is definitely an issue around here, and the money component reflects the fact that it's the poorest state in the nation.

(had to stick up for my school 🙄 😍 )

We had our AVMA accreditation renewal visit a few months ago... the atmosphere was a bit tense with "inspectors" walking around for a week, but I heard it went well...

I don't know that any of the vet schools have a lot of diversity. Out of a class of 140 we have 4 minorities.

UF and TAMU have pretty good diversity from what I remember of the stats sheet on the AVMA site.
It's funny though. A lot of school had very little diversity, which turned me off from them. However, had I gone, I would help increase that diversity. I've always wondered if other minority students refrained from applying to those schools, or if it is just harder for minority students to get into vet schools. Or is it just a numbers thing (states with a small minority population end up with few minority vet students)?

OSU undergrad prides itself on it is diversity. I think it is a matter of the applicants not applying to these schools.

Western has a good mix in diversity. 100 white people would look aweful funny in Pomona anyway:laugh:
